Los Angeles area harbor or gentle ocean?
« on: August 26, 2016, 09:22:43 AM »
Hi there.   I'm used to flat water like Channel Islands or gentle ocean like Carpinteria.   What's comparable in LA County? Are all of the boat harbors Sup friendly? Are any of the beaches super gentle entry?  Thanks for any help you can offer!

It depends on the current swell. With light swell any beach would work. If there are waves, or wind, you need a more protected beach. Marina del Rey is a good option, launch at Mother's beach.

Marina Del Rey Harbor and Redondo Beach aka King's Harbor are nice but PFD is needed and the scenery is not that great (boats and condos).  Just south of King's Harbor (3 miles south) is RAT Beach, a pretty mild beach break (when waves are waist and smaller) for easy launching with pretty scenery (and no PFD) along the cliff of Palos Verdes Peninsula.  If you are lucky, may be catching a few nice rollers at Bluff Cove (3/4 mile south of RAT).
