Starboard 7' 7'' x 27 PRO difference
« on: August 23, 2016, 01:26:44 AM »
Hello,

I'm looking forward to buy Starboard 7'7''x27 PRO in carbon. Found one from 2014 for a very good price and so I'm thinking if it is a good idea to save some extra $$$ and buy "older" model from 2014 instead 2015 or 2016 version which are quite expensive (I can buy 3 boards from 2014 for that money; so it is a quite big difference)? I saw that shape changed a bit from 2014; nose and overall shape etc. Has some of you ridden both?

What is the main difference? Is there some difference in stability? What about takeoff? Or are this only slightly changes that are not worth extra money? What do you think?

Thanks a lot!!!

What board are you moving from? The subtle differences between the model years may not be significant enough depending on what you're on now. Therefore, the 2014 may be a steal. But frankly, I think the better handle on the 2015/16 models are worth the extra cost.

The old style starboard handle is useless with gloves. I can barely carry my Pocket Rocket in winter w 3 mm gloves.

The ledge handle is much better. Works great on my hypernut.  BUT. This is a 7'7 carbon board and for what starboard charges. I'd still take the old handle for 1/2 the price. Their retail prices on carbon are crazy.

I'm currently on 8'6''x28 board, I will be using 7'7'' on clean days, for the rest; mush and chop, my 8'6'' will be under my feet if it will be neccesary. (I'm relatively light - under 55kg with wetsuit).

Yeah, I've heard about the useless handle but I'm kind of used to it as my current board also has the same horrible handle. But fortunately I always park a car on the beach when I go surfing, a couple of meters from the water and I do not need to wear the gloves during the winter... So I can "get use" to it:) beside that, do you think that I should give a go to 2014 model?

Having surfed on all three, I can tell you that the added thickness, the slight changes to the bottom and the rail  make the 2016 board a better board (easier to paddle into wave and faster down the line) than the 2014 board.

Be that as it may, the 2014 is still a super fun board to surf on clean days (and even on semi-chopped days if you can do it) if you can get a good condition one for under $800.  Don't spend the $2K+ for the 2016 unless you are on it 5 or 6 days a week.
