Looking for a board under $1000 - im 6'3 215
« on: August 22, 2016, 09:34:52 AM »
I just got into paddle boarding and want to buy my own.  The store near me is selling all their boards from $1500-2500 and i have been on sites and amazon and i see similar boards for $800-1000 so I am hoping to find something online that i can trust.  I would like something that can also catch a wave if i drive to the east coast but will mainly be on flat water.  I didn't get much of a workout the first couple times i went so im wondering if a fast/speed board would be a better workout for someone trying to get into shape who is into more of the speed/thrill of water sports?

any recommendations to help me out?  I am looking at a few from ATX and a couple on amazon that look similar to the one i have been renting (surftech universal 11'6).

On a hard board look at the Cruiser site, the Kona Classic looks pretty nice at either the 11' x 31" or 11' 6" x 32". $949 with shipping. Cruiser's paddles are quite good for the price point.
On inflatables, if you have some time keep an eye on eBay.  They often have a great price on a last year's (or current)
inflatables. I bought a 2016 Mistral 14' x 28" Emotion race board for just under $900 with shipping. Buy a known brand 12' 6" by about 30" wide, and 6" thick on an inflatable to minimize flex, but stick with the known top brands like Imagine, Naish, Starboard, or JP. I've seen some great buys in the $800 range for some really nice ones. I had an Imagine Mission (12' 6" x 30") which would handle your weight very well (I am 195 lbs.)
Be sure to buy a board that paddles well where you will paddle most of the  time. Even an 11 to 11-6 board gives up a lot of speed on flat water.
Good luck.

I'd look at the used market to see if you can get something with more performance.  What you're riding is a nice stable cruiser but not really gonna generate a lot of speed.

Not sure where you are, but since there's rental places and sites to paddle imagine there must be some market.  If you really want something that will get you more speed, you're looking at a 14' board and not sure I'd trust any of those new for $1K.  You can go crazy with options and shapes but I recommend price be a primary driver for the 1st board.  The board you can afford is worth a lot more than the ones you can lust after.

Be on the lookout for something 14' and about 28" wide.  If it's water-tight and you can get it for around $800--grab it and get out there!

im in tampa, i see a lot of boards online right now I would buy but they just link you to local stores (which had nothing in that price range).  Can anyone link me some options online?  maybe up to $1150 for at least an 11'6?  ATX is one of the only brands i see that ships and sells from their website.  Also, is there anything I need to know about inflatable boards, i assumed they would be cheap and to stay away from if i could but looking at this video i might enjoy them more being able to take them to the east coast and surf occasionally https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DKTrexwHyg

Bulky makes a good point of going with a 14 ft. board re. performance. Your price point is the issue. ATX-SUP sells their Lahui Kai 14 ft. Team Race model 27.75 inches wide that most likely would be fine to learn on in flat water assuming your balance is decent. It is $1210 with free shipping. My concern is it is a light weight and pretty fragile board and if you fell and landed on it at your size you will not be happy with the results. I saw some at their shop in Austin with a lot of dents.  Something more in a turning style than race model would make more sense in my opinion as a first board considering your size.

Pretty certain the Bic and LLBean are the same board with just a small tweak to the labels.  Very good, durable recreational boards.  Heavy too.  Still going by your OP that spoke of getting some speed, so if that's what you're looking for it likely won't deliver.  32" of width and 30lbs doesn't exactly slide through the water.

Inflatables have improved a great deal but not for those of us over 200lbs.  That model is fine if you just want to tool around a bit, but not really gonna log miles.  They're a good option for some, but even if they did work for my size I don't think I'd have much patience for the inflation/deflation time.

Just looked on CL in Tampa cuz I was curious and you weren't kidding--that's been slammed with a bunch of questionable dealers.  We get a lot of that here.  Check out Distressed Mullet website classifieds as well.

thanks for taking the time to look into it.  I'm open to going either one of two options.  a longer board that i can just put on the bay and go distance for a workout...  Or get an all around board that i can take to the beach and ride little waves like in that video, in this case im wondering if the inflatable boards would be a good option.

another inflatable board that seems cheap but good:
