I've noticed Hatteras usually has better waves than a lot of other places. Nice pics!

cool pictures,  I surfed there in the summers of 72,73, 74  and 75. always at least 2 road trips down to there from DC where i worked, while going to college .( Mt parents tried to ditch me on the west coast, but benighted innovative and resourceful college student that I was  I tracked em down>>> will work for food.
Th one thing that i remember besides the warm water and  nice beach and pretty decent surf were  the deer flies,  I can remember  this dam things would latch on to your back even while you were paddling,. So this one time one did that and I was paddling out knowing I was gettinging chomped and I had this great idea  I'lljust duck dive under the lip of that outside  wave  and  the deer fly will suffer the fate he deserves>>>>> NOT SO   he stayed on my back  chomping away while I went under the wave and was still there  when I came  to the surface.. Tough   little  bugs.
SEA BIRDS THEY DO TOUCH AND GO AS THE WORLD JUST TANGOES BY.... SO I SADDLE UP MY SEAHORSE WITH MY FLYROD IN MY HAND.... 10'3 King custom  10'6"  c4 da beachboy

Really funny to hear those memories. I've heard the same stories from my neighbor who was in infamous surfer in those days and still is hilarious to catch a session with.  Those deer flies aren't as common as they were for some reason, they may be effected by mosquito control or other environmental changes.  They do still exist, but I think I was only chomped on twice all summer.

Many of the deer flies moved to the mainland. There are plenty there if you get nostalgic ;).

Was just recently down in HI and found a spot that I've been on dozens of times but I'd never thought I'd surf. Known as the epicenter of mid-atlantic surf fishing, "The Point" on Cape Hatteras is where the Labrador and Gulf streams collide. Depending on the wind direction, you can either surf Buxton or Frisco to get off-shore conditions. But this recent trip, I drove out to the Point to fish but found a nice sandbar breaking with long lefts and rights. Unfortunately, it was only thigh high at most but most of the rest of the island was flat.
The 1st pic below was taken towards the end of the day and after the break died due to the incoming high tide (photo credit: Coastal Helicopters, LLC). I was surfing about 4:00 in the pic below. You can still see little peelers in the pic.

The 2nd pic was take a few days earlier by the same helicopter on the 'hook' side or southside of the hook (9:00 to 3:00 in the pic above). Those little black specs are 4-6' critters with lots of teeth. All of the years that I've spent on the Point fishing, I've seen a few of those and larger reeled in. And that's why I never thought I'd surf this spot. Since this location is filled with fishermen, I was courteous of lines in the water and constantly had my head on a swivel.
