Hatteras Summer waves
« on: August 14, 2016, 01:35:52 PM »
I’ve been noticing a few posts on the lack of waves in the Atlantic this summer.  We’ve been down on Hatteras all summer and, although the swell has not been huge, we have had waves almost daily. We’ve only had one sizeable swell, but we’ve had a healthy number of days from stomach to shoulder high.
If you need a wave fix, consider a road trip down this way.  The forecasters don’t seem to have this place figured out and a wave forecast of 1-2’ often translates into stomach to chest high waves.  If you’re coming, use a reliable wind forecasting tool like windfinder.com and look for west winds, or light SW winds.  Be ready for low tide, most breaks are best the half hour before low and the hour, or two after low tide. If the winds clock out of the north, just drive south, the whole bottom part of the island faces south.
Attached are a few photos of an average to average plus day that had a little too much wind.  On those bumpy days my wife’s been using my JP 8’2” Surf Pro and I’ve been loving the 7’11” Wide Surf.  At 7’11”x30.5 and 106 liters it’s about perfect for me in the chop, and it still rips off it’s nicely pulled in squash tail.

Hey thanks for the pics.  Haven't been down there since the early Eighties.  Got waves every trip. Sometimes nothing big but always fun.  What a great place to go in the summer.  So much coastline available to surf.

Nice pictures Ian..... glad someone is getting surf this summer  :)
You must be loving the quiver of JP's.... they look great....that will keep you interested in different swells!

We had a good run of solid waves last week.... it was well used!

Nice Creek, I heard you guys had a bump. I've been enjoying the JP demo quiver, and have met some great folks that have come to try different boards.  It's good to see what one end's up using when there are a bunch of boards around, it's a good education. Must have's:  1)Smallest ripper I can, reasonably, stand upon, 2) Slightly wider ripper that I can stand on in chop, 3) Long board style sup for small waves and a change of pace, 4) Big wave board that paddles in fast and can handle a steep drop.
I'm really looking forward to the fall and New England. Cool temps and cool water sound really good right about now. Hope we can link up with some of the usual suspects and have some waves.

Hatteras is great but it's out there...used to go a lot before they moved the lighthouse.

Favorite spot was Frisco Pier...south of the point...northeast swell would wrap around and clean-up nicely.

I remember the Natural Art Surf Shop and "In the Eye" surfboards right there in Buxton.

Good times.

Is Bubba's BBQ still in business?

I really enjoyed this thread. Brought me back to my old Hat days. Been way too long since I drove down from Jersey. Your breakdown of a perfect quiver is spot on! I have all those boards except the longboard style sup. But a buddy has one right around the corner and let's me use it alot. 10'6" PSH All-Rounder. Nice shots of the fun summer surf.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Sadly, "Bubba's BBQ" is gone.  But there is a very good and fun restaurant in it's place called "Captain Rolo's".  Where "Bubba Too" was is a new place called "Bros", and it's very nice, hip and very good.  The Frisco pier break isn't what it was a few years ago.  There is still a wave there, but it's not that great.  The fun thing about Hatteras beach break is that the good spots move around. Sometimes they stay for a year, or a few years, then gone.  Every season I drive the beaches, and paddle the ones I can't drive looking for the best spots for the different swell and wind directions.
Don, glad you nabbed some rippers, sounds great. We're leaving Hatteras soon, back in the north, hope to get out with you pretty soon.
Should have a new, and improved JP/Imagine demo fleet in tow, see you all soon.

I still have my JP Surf Widebody 8ft 8 from a few years back - still a great allround surf shape - catches waves easy for its size, turns fast and stable as you can get.

Nice Coldsup, the 8'8" Surf Wide is a pretty versatile board.  I have one in the current fleet, and have taken a few waves on it. Fast and loose, the pro model in the demo fleet is super light, 17lbs for 135 liters, really makes throwing it around on a wave easy. I'd love to get your impressions of the new 8x30 129 liter Surf Slate that's arriving soon.
