I'm surprised they seem to have gotten this far. Figuring 50 percent gross margin that's $3500 for the bits. Can't build a golf cart for that. It's remotely possible, with lots of subsidies, that the car could be produced, but it seems unlikely that they could pull off this price in a car with reasonable safety features. Tata produces one of the cheapest cars in the world, the Tata Tiago, for about $5,000 base price. Made in-country, with every feature as skimpy and cheap as possible. Would never pass US crash testing requirement or safety requirements for most countries, dinky diesel engine and they sell many millions of them per year--no lack of production scale.

Then again, Elon Musk is working to deliver a Tesla 3 for a base price of $30K. Of course the effort is highly subsidized (anything of this scale has to be) and the battery for that car would cost $30K if it were built today. The Gigafactory has to really perform, not just on volume but on cost. Fortunately, it probably will. I've reviewed a lot of the tech going into that building. The size is the least amazing thing about it. It's a whole different thing.

Zoo,  Like 'cures' that arise from ignominy in today's naturopath community, these little jobbers have been around forever, even in this country.  This King Midget and the Crosley were "popular" when I was a kid.

What do you think of this?
http://eliogenuine.eliomotors.com/?sctp=sm&scvn=fb&scsrc=fb&sckw=na

Elio has twice missed their target delivery date (2014 and 2015) and I think they're about to achieve the trifecta missing the new expected street date of Q4 2016 too since they're still messing about with the prototype and haven't locked in a design.

If the constant tinkering with the vehicle wasn't already worrisome, at one point they were trying to sell manufacturing equipment from the Shreveport, LA production facility on ebay and earlier this year they told the SEC they've lost $50+ million so far.

I don't know where things went wrong since they had a good idea, and they built at least two solid prototypes, but I think the project has gone past the tipping point and the most people can hope for is to have their deposits returned.

Interesting.  So they are probably still advertising in hopes of getting more deposit money to keep them afloat?  What a bad investment that would be.  You probably won't get a car or your deposit back.

Crosly hotshot, now there's a memorable piece of crap. the company's engineers came out of the refrigeration world, and the engine reflected that. Horrible.

Since Mr. Crosley made his fortune with Crosley Refrigerators, that makes him a refrigerator magnate.

There's a Crosley Hotshot vintage racer that occasionally runs in my group. It's fun to see how many times I can lap him in a 15 minute race. Usually at least three times The only irritation is that he drives on the racing line as if he actually needed to. It's pointless to explain to people that they don't actually need to follow the line through corners and late apex if they aren't going much past the speed limit in the pits. Once an instructor shows them "the line", that's where they need to be.
