This is just a prejudice based on reputation, but I suspect...
Newport animal dentistry = $1600
Santa Ana animal dentistry = $80

Oh yeah, that's next.  If anywhere would have a dog plastic surgeon, Newport would have it.  :)

You're joking, I know, but I'm basing my future vet patronage on that same concept.  Gonna dump my vet and find a vet in regular person land, not in the Newport wealth bubble.  My stupid mistake I suppose, but I have been using that vet for 25 years and they are changing; now going for the rich crowd I suppose.  Not good for surf bum teachers like myself.

Laying the bill after the fact was certainly not the way to go.  I always made sure everything was itemized and arrangements made BEFORE services were rendered, with eventualities outlined and explained. If costs overran, I would usually just absorb them rather than present an upwardly revised bill.

One of the best ways to alienate clients is to just do work then bill without explanation.  Your vet lost a long term customer.

Agree, and their response was, "We discovered a lot more problems as we did the work."  Probably not a big deal to their regular customers, but it's ruined my week.  Was going to get our house tented for termites, and that will have to wait for awhile now.  Spent it all on Hollywood style dog dentistry.   [/whining]

Zoo, sorry it sounds like you got soaked. As for an inland vet rec we used Happy Tails when our puppy had parvo and for all other checkups. He came through it just fine and the vet (and staff) was very human re seeing him and of course the bill. They are a bit of a hike away in Garden Grove. http://www.htanimalhospital.com/

That's exactly what I was looking for, Adam.  Thanks so much.

You up for a Trails trip sometime in the next week or so?  I was thinking about trying to do an informal Zoner meetup there again.

It takes a quiver to do that.

Colt 45 32ouncers.  One for the vet, one for you, and one for the dog.

This whole thing has inspired me to start hosing off my new puppy's teeth regularly:

Wow, looks like he really enjoys that ;D

On a serious note what do you other dog owners think about Dentastix?  They seem to work pretty well for our 6 year old bully.

Of course,  if you get your car jacked going to Compton you might come out on the bad side of the equation.  I used to be a motorcycle mechanic in Compton. My friends called me the Compton Flash because they assumed I had to beat a hasty retreat every evening. Actually, I never had a problem though the dealership was built like a fortress--four featureless sides around a courtyard entered through an arch with big steel doors that could be closed off.  Found a great taco place that had spectacular food--ate there almost every day for about a buck.

Yeah, it was a long time ago.

Dentastix seemed to upset my dogs stomach and cause acid reflux.

My dog loved the Indigo Fresh mint flavored dental sticks but they recently stopped making them, so I switched to Greenies which actually do a better job. The Greenies are a little more expensive but they work great to clean her teeth. They are also healthier. I've been giving her a small stick after every meal and as occasional snacks for a couple years now. She had the rottenest breath and I was concerned that she might get gum disease. The chew sticks cured the problem and keep her teeth pretty clean. I get them from https://www.chewy.com/

One important thing to keep in mind is to never give a dog (or any animal for that mater) anything with sugar in it. It's tragic to think of all the dogs that suffer the excruciating pain of tooth decay which may take months or even years to diagnose, followed by the trauma of surgery and huge vet bills. To make it worse, many people refuse to pay for surgery so they just let the dog suffer.
