C4 Waterman Crossover Upgrade?
« on: July 24, 2016, 05:16:16 PM »
My wife bought me a SUP ATX Adventure XL about a year ago, and it is time for an upgrade. I have been looking at the C4 Waterman Crossover 10'10.
I am 6'2" / 220lbs.

95% will be in Mobile Bay which depending on time of day is either flat, breezy/choppy, or windy/rough.

5% will be in Gulf of Mexico which is usually confused/rough and sometimes surfable.

Looking at Crossover because mainly will be cruising in chop but want to be able to surf in gulf.

Thoughts on the board?

Thanks!

So you are talking about Inflatable SUP's You can search the ZONE here for TONS of info on that My only suggestion is stick to major MFG who will be there in both design, construction and warranty
Companies I've had excellent dealing with Starboard, Fanatic, JP, Naish They aren't the cheapest but they are the best...But I bet there are other companies doing good here Like I hear good stuff about RedPaddle but I know nothing about them

Don't forget ULI.

C4 has kind of disappeared, at least from my perspective.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I'm not sure you'll find much noticeable upgrade in performance going from a 12' SUP ATX to a 10'10 C4 - the C4 is narrower but also shorter which reduces speed & tracking a little.

I'd upgrade based on your 95%, which is flatwater touring.  A 12'6 or a 14' board, if your dealer carries C4 I'd look at the 12'6 Mongoose or the 14' Wai Nui.   Something in the 12'6 x 30-32" range or 14' x 29-30" range would be a nice upgrade IMO.  Demo a couple and let us know what you think :)

At your size you might want to think about a hard board vs. iSUP. I paddled in Galveston Bay a bit and my recollection is Mobile Bay is similar re. flat or short pitched chop and in the latter conditions the inflatables tend to flex and  pound with us larger guys (6'2" x 195 lbs.). While you might have to drive a couple of hours to the nearest dealer consider looking the Imagine Crossover 12'6".I think it will do well on flat water and then still be reasonable in chop and small surf.

I am definitely looking for a hard board, and the Imagine Crossover looks promising. They make a 12', 11' and 10'6". I assume the 12' would float me pretty well. Might have to make a drive to check one out.

Try the 12 ft. one at 198 liters, at our size. Hope one of the two dealers in your area has one. Good luck.

Just demoed the 10'10 Crossover in 20+ mph winds with 3-5 foot waves. It has a rounded bottom and little rocker. It is tippy for those conditions and was not easy to catch waves. I normally use the SIC Recon 11'11 in those conditions and I'm smiling the whole time. That Recon 11'11 is magical. I thought I'd try other boards before I bought another SIC probably the 11'4 Recon.
