Masonboro Island
« on: July 21, 2016, 01:06:49 PM »
Has anyone else been to Masonboro Island near Wilmington, NC? It is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast. The island is 8.4 miles long and consists of marshes, tidal flats, and beach. It's also a national estuarine reserve. It's so easy to get to and it's a beautiful trip. They also allow primitive camping but there's not much shade so I don't know about camping there in the middle of summer.

I grew up there, really cool spot. Back then, I was on a longboard and would paddle across the inlet from the south end of WB to there to surf (or get a boat ride from someone when we were lucky). It sets up really nice on NE swell as the jetty takes all of the current out and the waves wrap around nicely.

I'm sure it would be a really easy paddle from WB on a SUP.

It is a beautiful, pristine island...definitely worth it.

If you decide to paddle across Masonboro Inlet from WB just be careful of boat traffic.
