One thing to endanger his own life, but it looks like he had a girl or a child riding on back.

Let me get ahead of this one.

If they'd been wearing a leash...

Those things are dangerous in the lineup...

Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a jet ski and wanted to know what's a good one for a first timer...

They should have used rail tape to keep those rocks from banging up the sides of that ski...

Seemed like he was going more right, he should learn to turn to both sides. How can I learn to drive a ski all day and only turn the bars right and still go straight as an arrow?

Anyone know how to repair scratches in the paint on a Yamaha wave runner?

Anyone got any idea how fast he was going? (Cue 200 posts on measuring the rock size and calculating the distance traveled multiplied by the number of frames per second with error correction for the drag coefficient of that particular model of ski.)

And finally, I can't wait for someone to post 12 pics of their custom jet ski running into a jetty on Maui in '89.

Sorry, just lost my mind and wanted to have a little fun. Can you imagine how every argument end will end for that guy forever? "Well at least I didn't drive us into a giant wave on a jet ski."

Glad no one got killed.

The takeaway for me is that if you ride a jet ski where you should not you might be subject to very scary, well timed music that insites panic on the inside as each hard lesson rolls in, one after another.

I hear it was a rental. so he's got that going for him. and it was a man and a woman, so yeah, his life is over unless he moves to Namibia. I wonder if he'll get his deposit back. Nice list cowboy, but you forgot PFDs.

I grew up in Balboa and Newport, and most folks really have no idea how crazy the wedge is. After breaking a board there and tombstoning for a while pinned under that craziness, I learned that it's only kinda fun without anything but fins - that wave runner rental was just a bad idea all the way round :-)

Wanna have some fun? Go hang out there on the beach & watch everyone trying to not get killed, not to mention the steady flow of lifeguard trucks hauling dudes out on stretchers & folks collecting broken boards!

My guess is that the rental came from inside the harbor.... I doubt that Ski was beach launched that day.

He may have thought he was in the channel, heading back into the harbor.
From the ocean, finding a Harbor entrance is not as easy as it appears on the way out.... especially with huge swells blocking your view.

Would a rental company  allow a Jet Ski to leave the harbor complex, on a day that big?

If it's a rental as others said, I imagine he is going to have some legal consequences to deal with.  There is just no way the rental outfit didn't tell him some boundaries on where not to go.  Glad he and his passenger are ok and that's what really matters, but I'm sure he feels like an A1 doofus now.

I think Creek is correct ... he mistook the Wedge for the harbor entrance.  His second mistake was slowing down instead of gunning for the beach.

That was just totally reckless, what's next for this guy?  Rent a car from Hertz and drive beyond the 7 Sacred Pools or on unpaved roads on a drive to Hana? ;D

Love that footage from the Eddie!

I think Creek is correct ... he mistook the Wedge for the harbor entrance.

I grew up in Newport Beach and still am there quite often.

That is what it looked like to me - he mistook it as the harbor entrance.
Missed it by thaaaat much.

To me, it looked like he was gunning it even as he was about to hit the jetty.

Yeah, it can be difficult to find the entrance sometimes especially if not experienced and traveling that fast
with big waves blocking your view.

Yeah, they rent those from inside the harbor.

Very lucky no one was hurt - it could have been far worse.

I lived on Balboa island for several years after I got out of school  I used  to go watch the wedge break it was scary. I remember this little hawaian kid who looked like he could have been Gerry Lopez at age 12  surf it on a short board like it was nothing.  I first thought  that the guy was an idiot but  I think you guys are right  he missed the entrance to the harbor    My hats off to the life guards they are awesome.
