Funny, the caption below the video says, "A look at the BWT's Southern Hemisphere event in Mexico."

Whoever wrote that must have skipped Geography class in 7th grade.

Puerto is one mean arse mofo...muy peligroso...plenty of guys have died at 10'-15' faces...
I used to go down there 2-3 times per Summer back in the day before rescue skis and trained guards...stoked that I'm still alive to talk about it...
Saw a guy break his neck at 6'...another guy had a fin snap off in his leg on his first wave...plenty of danger on land as well...banditos and bacteria...;-)
The locals charge...but, usually don't last long...the Mexican Pipeline takes it's cumulative toll...

Even a rip cord can't save you from the shallows. That water looked pretty scanky too. Infection city.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Wow, I do miss Puerto.  Got some epic days at La Punta.  And of course there was a secret spot to the south and the long gone sandbar point to the north.  Such a perfect wave until they dredged it all out.

I'm definitely stoked to have scored Puerto...and, spots north/south before it became a scene and regular stop on the pro surfing tour...always an adventure...Chacahua to Barra...bus rides...landing on the dirt runway in a puddle jumper that barely made it over the mountains from Oaxaca...being robbed...miss it all...;-)

That last pick looks like the robbers took everything but his underwear.

Went on a bodysurfing trip to Puerto Escondido in 1985.
Flew into Puerto on a DC 3 plane.
Took the cab from the airport - just a thatched shack - around
to town - Whoa! Huge Barrels.

We were just after the season had ended - very hot.  It was very deserted.
Just a few surfers and me and my girlfriend.  The surfers surfed
in the a.m and late afternoon.  We surfed mid-day - one at a time
in the water - just us.  It was about 8 to 10 foot faces.

I just remember going over the falls thinking - wow, here I am
at a beach I don't know, in huge surf with no guards or anything else
- hope there aren't any rocks down there - luckily had no problems.

Current was running several mph up the coast.  One time we did a hike
and just jumped in the water for a ride in the current back up the coast.

Lots more. A great and exotic trip back then.

Yup...I started going there a few years before that...before the Italian mafia really started moving the cocaine through there...first trip was on a bus...then that DC 3 from Oaxaca...streets were still dirt...

Deb lost her cookies on that flight from Oaxaca...no cabin equalization...my ears hurt just thinking about it...loved that thatched shack of an airport...crawling with roosters...;-)

Blew my mind when the aeropuerto went all internacional...made it mo bettah for traveling with my espousa...;-)

Yup, it looked just like your pictures Wardog.
Dirt streets and roosters and dogs.

We paid $25 a night at the best hotel.  I think it was called the Eliza.
Right behind the big rock between the surf beach and the bay beach
where they launched the fishing boats and played soccer.  It was pretty
nice.

We walked all around the town one day.  Guys offered rooms for as
low as $10 per night, thatched huts for $5 and just hammocks for $2.
Must have  been a thousand or so more rooms but only about 25 tourists
were in town - we were just in the hot off-season.

The seafood was awesome.  All just caught - fish and lots of different kinds
of shell fish, octopus, etc.

LoL, the flight in the DC 3 was very memorable - definitely - going in and out of the clouds just skimming
the mountains.  At that point, we were thinking we should have taken the bus but that would have
taken hours more and didn't appear to be much safer if at all.

Later, I noticed, occasionally, some of those flights didn't make it.

Then they put in jet port.

Good old daze for sure...;-)
We used to stay at the Bungalows Acuario down by the Far Bar...had a top floor room for the surf view...check out the pics from back in the day to now...smoly hokes!

The Jardin was pretty cool too...

Looks like there is a hotel where the old beach shack was down by La Punta that we were chillaxin' at with our boards in the pic below...

I remember when the Hotel Santa Fe went in...great wave viewing and healthy food that didn't get you sick...we got a helluva case of dysentery from eating at that Spaghetti House restaurant in town...caca flows downhill...;-)
