While these tests may not be applicable for the device you use - there does seem to be some variance between optical and chest sensors.

Even with our chest sensors - from time to time we get incorrect readings when under strenuous activity where the sensor moves a bit.

The screenshot you posted shows quite a low resting HR.  So that may be a problem with the device reading correctly - or your heart.  38 and 46 bpm is lower than normal.  For some athletes though - this may be fine.

It seems that you need a pretty good contact for the wrist sensor to read correctly.  If we got one - we would compare right away to our chest strap to determine the variance - and whether the watch sits ok on our wrist.  We like a looser fitting watch vs tight - so this may never work properly for us.  We were very interested though when they first came out.

I'll add a chest strap. All I have to do is find them, I have a bunch of ANT+ straps around. Buried. Of course all I have to do to find the stash is to buy a new one. which is exactly how I got them all to begin with.

This article isn't about maximum heart rate, but about how exercise can create similarities in the heart to heart disease.  "Andy" in the article is actually based on me.  Several years ago, I'd told the magazine editor about my experience of having a doctor freak out about my low heart rate, and become convinced I'd had a heart attack, which led to the author--a cardiologist/swimmer--writing the article.

I think my resting and max. rates are pretty typical now, but when I was in college and running a lot, I'd test my pulse in classes out of boredom and see how low I could get it by relaxing, and I could get it down to 28 or 29/min. in my Atmospheric Science class.  I don't think that's unusual for a younger runner, but it would freak out most doctors.

Interesting article.

A couple of years ago, I reviewed several articles and other info which suggested that elite aerobic athletes can induce damage to their hearts through repeated and long bouts of hard aerobic exercise. They suggested that there was an optimal exercise "dose" for achieving the lowest death rates. I backed off on hard long distance training as a result.

Here's one TED talk by cardiologist James O'Keefe that's quite popular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6U728AZnV0

That vid when it was first posted also made me think of not over-stressing my heart as well - and have since not gone into the red zone top limit.  I look at my HRM and basically back off when it reads 180.  That is plenty high enough at my age.

I have ordered a chest strap from team Amazonia! I have no stash only an old polar which is not compatible...

My threshold for a NASTY shock from my ICD had been reset to 214. I have gone as high as 195 winter surfing in bigger waves. My personal alarm I set at 185. Beep beep outa there!

Saw a reading of 214 once attempting Connor Baxter stroke which spooked me. Had my Device Specialist do a remote download from my Cyborg Implant. The 214 was an artificact as the highest they have ever observed is 187 with absolutely normal waveforms. No AFIB no VFIB just a very old crazy SUP fella!

187, wow, I have no idea what that would feel like. I used to train side by side with Diane on elliptical machines. She has a heart rate like a hummingbird. She's be set to "two" with no incline, and be slowing down because she hit 190. I'd be cranked to the stops with the incline at max, grunting and groaning, spraying sweat like an open hydrant, and I'd nudge 130. I stop for 30 seconds and the heart rate will read 55. And then I have to kill myself to get it above 100. the only way to get it up above that is to hold my breath, but doing that when I exercise hard gives me vicious headaches.

I'm thinking 1/3 genetic, 1/3 exercise, and 1/3 age. Whatever, I'm not gonna worry about it, it is what it is. I haven't heard of anything to really change it or any reason to try.

Ok, this post inspired me to make an excel calculator that lets you do a side-by-side comparison of your age-predicted maximum HR and exercise intensity zones and your "real" maximum HR and exercise intensity zones. Could be useful for people like Pono whose actual max HR is far outside the age-predicted value. Let me know what you think.

I wore the chest band today. It mated up well with the wrist sensor, but I didn't do anything strenuous. There doesn't seem to be a way to record both, so I just swiched back and forth. If I can figure out how to get tracks for both I'll use the strap on a run.

Cool calculator. I'll try it.

Wore my chest strap in the 4th Annual Shark Paddle today. Missed the start of the 2 mile rev so I had to do the 6.5 Elite. WTF!

6.64 miles 1 hr 55 minutes 151 av hr 171 max hr 1 hr 33 minutes in zone 4.

My personal observations is that the strap input is more accurate at a micro level which for someone with my cardiac issues is a good thing. The wrist based seems to spike high which spooked me, but did not see the spikes with the strap.

But, the averages were the same. I think I will use the strap in a race situation, or in larger surf and am pleased with the wrist based in the surf as well as flatwater. Just need to figure out if I can set the beep beep get out of the water bozo alarm at 180!!

Your experiences and needs will vary!

It is possible to switch from wrist to strap while paddling. Not recommended. SPLASH!

Eagle and Tex_sup nailed it. I've done three hard-charging downwinders with the chest strap linked to my Speed Coach to record heart rate and also recorded the optical sensor for the VivioActiv. At rest and with minimal activity the Vivoactiv looks somewhat accurate, under strenuous exercise it's wildly inaccurate. I didn't really need the Speed coach for verification--if my heart rate was varying like the Vivoactiv says I'd probably keel over.

I also did some speed calibration checks with the Speedcoach--just known distance and time vs. reported speed. Looks very accurate, I don't have a precise way to test instaneous speed, but some simple walking tests yeilded consistent results. Got to be doppler, though I don't see that mentioned in the specs. I'm trying to get the raw data to see what they do. There's a lot that can be done with more processing power. Most smaller GPS devices, or older stuff, have a pretty limited processor, but newer stuff can do a lot more, managing more satellites, compensating for the DoD's fiddling with the signal (I thought they had stopped that, but really it's just compensated out of the signal, which the DoD didn't think could be done. They didn't expect us to wear supercomputers on our wrists.

Amazing that we can wear a device on our wrists that do a doppler shift calculation that  factors each satellite's unique orbital velocity (somewhere around 7km/sec) and the angular velocity of the bit of earth you're standing on (about 400 m/sec at the equator) plus your motion paddling your board in the 3 to 10 MPH range--all the way down to a fraction of a MPH. And then it does a lot more besides.

Yep. The spikes from the optical NFG for ne. The strap is very accurate. Did a double strap polar to vivio comparison - identical.

GPS is great, and I spend too much time in zone 4 and 5. BUT Speedy Gonzales Heart has been given clearance..

I've noticed the same thing with the Vivioactive. It's pretty accurate for most things, but inconsistent for paddling. I do seem to get a better reading when I tighten the strap a little more then normal. I'm wondering if wearing it under a dark long sleeve rash gaurd would help by blocking out the bright sun light. Anyone try that?
