What to use to reseal board?
« on: June 22, 2016, 08:30:24 AM »
The clear coating on my four-year old board is peeling off.  What should I use to reseal it?  And where can I buy the material?

Not completely clear if it's your hotcoat peeling off (rare, and very bad) or just a clear coat over paint. If it's the former you need pro help, if it's the latter than sand it lightly to scuff the surface and get rid of any lightly adhered flakes, and spray it with some rattlecan clear enamel. Unless you're a fussbudget like Covesurfer, in which you can make a two month project out of it, or a lazy buggah like me, in which case you can just let it peel.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Like Pono said, If it's just a 2K epoxy clear coat, then you can sand it down and re-apply a new coat.

If it is a delam on the hot coat that means it never cured properly. Usually a bad mix from the get go. Over time a piece flakes off, then another. Pretty soon it spreads all over. Mine was just in the nose area at first, so I re-glassed (and re-shaped) the nose.  http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,21819.0.html  Now it's spreading down the rails like a cancer.
I would have to sand the entire hot coat and gooey mess under and re hot coat mine if I wanted to spend the time to do it right. I just sand the bad area and spray it with a paint can now and then.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

It's the clear coat.  And I'm definitely of the lazy variety - my to-do list is too long - don't need another project.  I was only concerned because I read somewhere that water could seep in.  If that's not a possibility then I won't worry about it.
