Sunova fin dimensions
« on: June 10, 2016, 12:49:56 AM »
Anybody know what the dimensions of the stock fins that come with the speeed are? I don't see any info on the website.

Different sizes based on board length and presumed rider's weight.  My 8'5" came with 94 fronts and an 83 rear.

If you can specify what length board, I'm sure someone can give you the fin size that comes with it.

I think the 8'10 Speeed comes with 105 fronts and a 94 rear.

105 = 5 1/8th" high x 5" base.

94 = 4 3/4" high x 4 3/4" base.

IMO, the 105's are too big for riders under 200 lbs.

Sunova uses the same fins on their Stand Up boards as they do on their prone boards.  The number refers to the recommended riders weight in kilos for their prone boards.

Tino said once that Bert believes that Stand Up Boards require bigger fins. That's why the stand up boards come with fins designed for very heavy prone surfers.

Both my Flows came with big 105's which to me, at 170 lbs +-, ride way too stiff. The Flow rides a lot better with all 94's and I think I could even go smaller on the rear, at least on the 8'4.

Okay, this would be for an 8.8 Speeed. Im 227lbs, so the 105 might be fine for me. I tend to like riding uniform sized thrusters though.

I'll ask Tino to chime in here,  but he may be traveling at the moment.

Well my 8'8 Speeed came in. Turns out it comes with 105s all around. Funny that the 8'8 would have bigger fins than the 8'10 comes with.

Come to think of it, the 8'10 I rode probably also had all 105s.

With all the Speeeds out there, I'm surprised that no one corrected me. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. Took the board out for a spin today. It was stormy mush, but the 105s didn't feel too stiff. But I'm 103kg, so I guess that isn't too surprising. They are about GL1 sized, with a wider base, more rake and a little less height. Not a bad fin, really.

I had the GL1s on a previous board but ended up going with GL2s which I felt were perfect for my weight of 75 - 80 kg.

You'll probably be happy with the 105s.

I just got a 8'4" Flow and looking to size down on the fins (I'm around 190lbs / 85Kg).  Wondering what folks would recommend for a smaller set from FCS?  I also have an 8'10" Speed and may want to change up the stock fins there as well.

Thanks!

I use FCS M 5's on my Speeed and Acid

you may be able to do M 3's but the Flow might be better with the 5's

Wetsuit?  ;)

Creek is dead on.  I step down from GL1's to FCS M5's depending on board and conditions when i'm running thruster.  Two great sets of fins.  Im 210lbs BTW.

Thanks for the input!  Picked up a set of M5 and M3's.  Looking forward to trying them out!

Anyone tried riding the flow with a quad setup?

Hi PabstSUP,
I am a little over the top with changing fin combinations, and have ridden my 8'7" Flow with every size and combination of thrusters, 2+1 (larger center fin and smaller sidebites), and quads. I am currently experimenting with how small I can go as a quad set up for my 163 lbs in small waves. I have it set up with 4" fronts and 3.5" rears. Really fun and loose and will turn on a dime, though I am not sure how it would work in larger surf; probably slide out on a hard bottom turn but I will probably find that out the hard way. I think that my next try will be to go up to 4.5 on the fronts, and leave the tiny rears in place.
The tail of the Flow is wide enough that quads make a lot of sense on that board.

I've been riding my Flows as quad since day one and think they suit the shape well. Having two Flows allows me to run four 94s which for me at 170 pounds seems to work well.

I just picked up a Kinetik Racing X-4 quad set for half price on Amazon but haven't had a chance to try them yet.
