Fastest Paddler on Earth
« on: May 31, 2016, 03:24:56 PM »
Saw the recent post on Conner Baxter winning the recent Lost Mills 200 meter sprint on a 21" wide Starboard. Based on the title I did a little quick research, and I'm afraid they will need to put SUP in it. As an aside, Seychelle Hattingh and American paddling a Mistral Vortex (14' x 23.4") won for the women. The times for men and women winners were 53.12 and 1:02.5 seconds respectively.
Now as to speed, the men's 200 meter record in a C1 (17 ft.) Olympic canoe is 38.137 seconds or 28% faster, and for the K1 kayaks (I know; double bladed paddle) it is 33.818 seconds or 36% faster. I wonder what Conner could have done on an extra narrow unlimited board? The C1 and K1 are about 17' x 16" and the paddlers often 6'5" tall and 240 lbs., see them on a YouTube video, it is amazing to watch.

Surfski paddlers are even faster than K1. Surprising, but LaPerouse corrected my misunderstanding some time ago. K1s are limited to 5.5 meters, surfskis are not, so they can reach and sustain higher speeds. 200 meter is probably too close to call, anything longer than that and the surfski probably wins given equal capability of the paddler. All the same, SUPs will probably never be as fast until someone kneels on one using a wing blade. Or until I get my theoretical elliptical Hobie fitted with foils.

sigh...  Ski's are only faster over longer distances.  K-1's are the sprint kings.

This thread explains it.

Ya, but how fast are K1's in the open ocean?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Pretty sure that's what I said. Ah, having read the thread I see that it's very long distances where surfskis definitively beat K1's. So going back to that old thread where you beat me over the head with stats i hadn't seens before. What was that about??

Per the K1-surf ski issue; with a waterline of just under 17 ft. the theoretical (displacement) hull speed of a K1/C1 is about 5.4 MPH The K1 record time I mentioned at 200 meters averages about 13.2 MPH (from a standing start) so it is obvious they are planing. I suspect a K1 or surf ski designed for 200 meters on flat water would look different than the current designs. The same holds for an SUP designed for that short distance, hence the 21" Starboard design, which I suspect would not be a lot of fun in chop.

No, they are not planing. They are exceeding hull speed because they have a very high length to width ratio which softens the gradient of resistance from wave drag. There aren't any man-powered hulls that plane without some form of assistance from swell or wind. The best than can be done with our puny motor is to pop up on a foil. To actually push over the bow wave for kind of man-carrying hull requires at least a horsepower, and generally more like three. We are a long way from that.
