Red Paddle Hybrid fin
« on: May 30, 2016, 08:57:20 AM »
The recent RED models comes with a 6.5" fin box which is great when you want to roll the board
tight but not so great when you want to use your usual fins.

Enters the new Larry Allison Hybrid fin for Red Paddle Co boards.

The prototype I have for testing offers few advantages over the stock Red fin:
  • Click-in single handed installation with safety mechanism, no extra hardware required
  • Improved Tracking
  • More durable construction
  • Added surface area

Red stock 8" fin provides weedless shape with decent tracking and maneuverability for flat water.
Taking it to open ocean puts extra stress on the legs and doesn't handle cross-winds and side chop
as well. The fin also suffers from durability issues compared to standard fins from your usual companies.

The Click-in 9" Hybrid fin will immediately appeal to anyone who had to install/remove a fin on a freezing
day with gloves on. With its HDM construction it will last longer and on the performance side, you'll gain
superior tracking (I counted 20 strokes on each side)and better handling in open water conditions.

Check-out the installation vid https://www.dropbox.com/s/rmcohevfy4ktvs0/LA-Hybrid-RED.mov?dl=0

The fin showed here (which works perfect) is a prototype Larry sent me while we were working out the measurements of the box and the tension of the safety lock mechanism,  Larry said that the finished version will will perform even better on the installation side, he also mentioned a smaller 7.5" flat water version of this fin. The amazing thing here is that Larry never saw this board physically, he created the fin based on two pics and a phone conversation first time out!

Looks like Larry did pretty much exactly what I suggested for fitting long base fins on to a short box, though what I was talking about was the aercor fin.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

From the specs and pics I've seen, for their other boards, this fin should fit all the sports and race models. Mine is the Elite 14x26.

Will these new fins fit the Sport and Race models?

The fin box update happened during 2015. All 2016 boards now come with the short box in the tail. The windSUP 10'8" and 10'6" feature the old style long box in the center as a quasi dagger board fin option.

So these fins will fit the 2016 boards, but not the 2015?

The windSUP 10'8" and 10'6" feature the old style long box in the center as a quasi dagger board fin option.

Also, just to make it super clear, the Hybrid fin will NOT be compatible with the old style box
due it's safety lock on the back. It's specifically designed for the new style box from RED that has
openings on both ends

Thanks Julian!

It will fit the 2015 as well. The installation vid you saw was on a 2015 model.

Would I have a problem putting one of these fins on a 2016 Red Paddle Co 12'6" Explorer?

You're only problem would be to find one of those. If you're lucky you'll be able to score one by the end of the paddling season.
I've been waiting for the shorter version of it plus some other fins for almost 2 months. Almost forgot I was waiting until
you posted this message :D

If this is the same fin it shows in stock from Green Water Sports. http://greenwatersports.com/shop/red-paddle-co-glass-race-weed-us-box-fin

I ordered one this morning after I posted, I hope it makes a difference over the stock fin for the price.

EDIT: The picture of the fin I bought and posted about looks a bit different than the OP fin?

I thought you were referring to the Big Gray custom fin. As for the RED stock fin, you should be fine. Just verify with Julian from Green Water Sports
