Martha's Vineyard
« on: May 28, 2016, 05:23:35 PM »
Wondering if some of you New Englanders can help with the following info.  My daughter is leaving for a summer job on Martha's Vineyard in the morning.  She's a surfer, regrettably not yet a serious  standup paddler.

Are there any consistent breaks on the island?

If so, are they reasonably accessible to the public?

Since she only has room for one board - would she be better off taking a long board, or short?

Thanks for any info.

Glenn

Bumping this in the hopes that someone will be so kind as to respond soon tonight. . .

Revising the question below, FROM:  "Since she only has room for one board - would she be better off taking a long board, or short?"

TO: When there's some swell, are the breaks there consistently punchy enough to make a small fish fun - or is a log usually required there in the summer to have fun?

Depend how good she is, either way a longboard is the call for 95%, but if she's a good surfer a fish would also work most of the time, yes there is surf out there.

Hi Glenn, sorry I didn't see this earlier.

I have only surfed there a few times.

The prevailing wind is SW all summer so tends to be onshore a lot.
Plenty of glassy days, especially in July and the frequent dawn and dusk patrols.

Waves tend to be more longboard size in summer, but June and August cane produce some great waves.

If she is a good longboard surfer, that would be more useful most of the time, and as rbgar said, will be fine on bigger days if she is good.

There are some nice points on the Island that may work really well and be perfect on the SW wind.... explore!

Tell her her only board should be a SUP.... small enough to rip and big enough to paddle to less accessible breaks  :)

She's going to have an amazing time!

All pics of MV....

Following the satellite views of the shoreline is a good way to find some nice breaks. Looks like a world class destination to me. It must be fantastic with a decent swell. Definitely the ability to paddle to the more remote spots would be a great advantage.

She's going to have a blast. I've never surfed there but can't think of too many places better to spend a summer. I think we're all a little envious of her. You should probably plan on having to visit...... ;)

My wife and I loved Martha's Vineyard when we vacationed there over 20 years ago. We walked around Ocean Park overlooking Nantucket Sound. Fell in love with the homes and the laid back vibe of the island. I remember my wife informing me before we left on the trip, that I'm not to seek out the rental of surfing or windsurfing gear at the first sight of water.
Even when we met up with one of my surf buddies who grew up in Newport R.I. and walked the beach trail on the castle loop in Newport, I maintain my cool :)
Your daughter will have a blast. I doubt there will be too many crowded breaks. It's hard enough just to book a spot on the ferry if you're bringing a car.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Yep. SE, S, SW swells with N, NE, NW winds. Kinda like RI. Squib, South all easy access. Longboard a good summer choice. Surfed it a fair amount as my ex sister in law lived there..

Hurricane juice also!!

Screen shot for this Wednesday!!

SuptheCreek, StoneAxe, Badger, RBGAR, MrBig, TallDude -

You guys have definitely planted the hook for a summer SUP roadtrip - and the opportunity to share some waves with a very special person in my life!  Sent her off this morning with the closest thing to a perfect one-board quiver (prone) that I've ever experienced, so I'm sure she'll have a blast.  Thank you!
Glenn

Thank you Weed.  Amazing images of what obviously is a very special place!

Pono & mrbig - I'll see if I can get a report on how big that Wednesday bump actually turns out to be.  Clearly I need to start planning a road trip!
