Best iSUP for heavier paddler
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:26:28 PM »
Looking to get some opinions on inflatables for 200lb paddler. I'm most interested in race/touring shapes suitable for short course races. Particular models I had my eyes on would be: 404 Air, Boga Tsunami12'6 air, and Naish one. Any positive or negative feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

Have you looked at Red Paddles race boards:

http://redpaddleco.com/ca/board/126-race/

http://redpaddleco.com/ca/board/126-elite/

I don't know anything about these two particular boards, but Red does make a good product and it looks like these fit in with your weight requirement.

If you're interested, Julian from Green Water Sports (a site sponsor) could probably give you more information as he sells Red boards.

I actually just watched a YouTube video on their 14' inflatable. Thick could also be an option. Thank you!

200lbs isn't heavy. Just not light. You should be fine on most of the premium brand iSUPs that pump up to 18 PSI or beyond. The 2016 Red Paddle boards are outstanding for their weight/stiffness ratio. ULI very tough too.

Red paddle is getting some good feedback! Anyone have experience with the 404, Boga, or Naish?

You could also look at the 12'6" Sport for more all round ability: http://greenwatersports.com/shop/red-paddle-co-12-6-sport and our review: http://greenwatersports.com/6878/review-of-the-2016-red-paddle-co-12-6-sport-inflatable-paddle-board

I have experience with only the Naish ONE of the ones you mention. Bigger guys tend to need a thicker board or one that pumps to higher pressure. You don't want to go too thick though as the board starts feeling like a barge rather than a paddle board. The Naish is 6" thick but only pumps to 15PSI. You want more PSI for rigidity especially if you want to get into racing and not be paddling a wet banana.

Any other questions, happy to help.

I'm about 200 lbs and have been paddling Red Paddle boards for a while. Got on a 2016 14' Elite today and loved it!

Thanks guys! I did also see a review on the starboard inflatable! It too is interesting. Thank you all for your opinions. I'm trying to narrow down some options to demo before buying.

I've got a Starboard 16ft inflatable that would float two of you (no kidding - it is 400 Litres). I really enjoy paddling it, and it's not too heavy. I can paddle it tandem with my friends or kids, but it's quite nice to paddle solo too. It's nice having the glide from the extra length, and because it's an inflatable, there are none of the usual transport or storage issues that you get with unlimited class hard boards. I even travel with it abroad (although it is 16ft it still packs down into a backpack).

A rather left-field choice, I realise, but it has proved fantastic fun and a very adaptable board - you can carry masses of gear on it and it is as stable as a dock.

I haven't paddled mine yet as it just came in today, but my Red Paddle Explorer Plus is pretty damn stiff for a iSUP when inflated to about 20psi. It's my first iSUP after many glass rentals, just on dry land testing, I think it will provide for a rock-solid board. I plan on taking it out Sunday early morning....I'll report back.

I will say getting it to 25psi will be a REAL pain or I am just not just not strong enough. At about 20psi, it's a real chore to get more pumps in. I don't think I need to max it out as I'm about 170lbs or so.

There's a technique to learn to pumping. Use your bodyweight, bending at the knees, not the back, and keeping your elbows locked. But yes, getting to 25 PSI is a workout, and the lighter you are the harder it is. An electric pump can take most of the work out of it but you have to buy a good one, really. Mind you, I've got a cheap little 12v electric tyre pump and as long as I *only* use it for the last couple of PSI it works fine. You just don't want to run it for more than about 5 mins in one go, and you don't want to be using it every time (I leave my iSUPs inflated).

You can see in my video here how I change from arms and back into legs only as the pressure increases. I'm 190lbs and find that unless I need the absolute best performance from the board - hardly ever - 20PSI is plenty.
