Dear Jimmy
« on: May 18, 2016, 07:10:33 AM »
Please can we have a 16' by 25 Rail! Ice blue if possible. Nuff sed!

Just long enough to be faster than a 14', just short enough to not need a rudder, just different enough to not qualify for races so we can still feel like rebels even if we are getting grey hair.

We promise to be good and ride it every day. [edit to add:] And we promise to race them anyway.

Thanks for the idea, Badger. I can't believe I hadn't thought of it before.

A fine candidate for a radio rudder. I guess I better unpack my electronics and test equipment. Shipped it all back to HR after doing nothing with it in Maui. Still in the boxes.

I've often thought of getting Bill Foote to do a 16 or 17 foot version of the Maliko 14. A wicked downwind tool if there ever was one. Add a radio rudder with autopilot and it would be a weapon.

Great idea. I don't want a rudder: Keep it clean, keep it simple, keep it reliable. Footwork is fun!

16ft is a nice length IMO, and could have broad appeal.

Don't think you need the bump Yugi, it sounds kind of like he's gonna do it.

My opinion has always been that 14 is as small as you want to go without a rudder so I'm interested in how a 16 goes without.  Probably will depend on amount of vee in tail.  Even our 17s turn off the very back when we're up to speed... with just a slight vee.

I figured Jimmey Lewis makes such turny boards that a 16' would turn OK.

I've been on 16's with no kick in the tail and I manage but a rockered 16' like a Rail would turn much better.

I've been on the Rail. It's seems (I haven't been in a good DW yet. ) like a board which turns from the middle - as compared to something like a Javelin which had less tail kick and almost parallel rails right to the back. So if I can get a 14' Javelin to turn OK on a DW I'm guessing a 16' Rail wouldn't be much harder.

Your 17'4 Bullet has a straighter rear section than a Rail I think. It's obviously built around the rudder concept. Hence why I think a 16' specifically built to be handled without a rudder would be cool.

I DWed my old tiger-stripe F18 with the rudder removed and a dolphin fin in it's place--I think it was a Naish fin from a 11'4" Nalu. It worked OK, but was hard to connect any bumps, and if you got into something big and tried to turn into the face it rounded up right smartly. That was a good board, both for Viento and Maliko/SS, but it worked better with a rudder. I sold it to a zoner on the big island. I imagine it's still being used.

Jimmy's shapes would probably handle being rudderless a lot better than most, but I think it would be a fun board to try an RC rudder with. I have some wait time in rebuilding my engine while the engine shop fiddles with a new block, so I'm going to spend the morning clearing the decks to get started on a semi-production version.
