Gorilla tape sufficient to keep water out temporarily?
« on: May 01, 2016, 09:41:03 AM »
Is Gorilla tape OK for keeping water out of a hole in your board for one session?  I was putting a new vent plug into the board I just drained and repaired, and I muffed it and got resin into the vent, ruined.  Pulled the whole thing out and cleaned up the hole but I have to drive over to a supplier on Monday to get a new plug.  I put Gorilla tape over the vent plug hole and was going to surf the board in the morning, but now I'm worried that it will not be a good enough seal.  Anybody know anything about the efficacy of Gorilla tape for keeping water out?

Never used Gorilla Tape, but most of the plastic tapes I have used, leaked.
The only one I trust is the silver (aluminum) plumbers tape.... super sticky and waterproof. Meant for fixing leaks.

If you put it on carefully, without folds in the tape, it works great.

I think Gorilla tape would work fine if that's all you have available. It's waterproof and sticks well as long as the surface is clean and dry when you put it on.

The other tapes sound good too, especially the plumbers tape.

Any vinyl sticker would also work well.  Maybe we should have some Goretex stickers made for just such an emergency. ;D

I have used that heavy duty plastic tape for sealing vapour barriers. I've had a patch on my loaner board for three years and no leaks. Gotta replace it for sure, but a great lazy guy's fix.

Duct tape leaks, including Gorilla. Plastic packing tape--the thin, clear stuff--is waterproof but eventually comes off. aluminum tape is nearly a permanent repair, as evidenced by my Bullet V1 which has a number of pieces covering cracks that have been in place for more than a year.

You guys convinced me.  I decided against using that board today.  I've spent the past couple weeks draining it and repairing the board, as Wetstuff said, "Why risk it for one sesh?"  Thanks for the advice.

Hey Mike,
You've been messing with that vent plug for awhile.....
Have you thought about hiring a pro to install it?
Alan Beels, of Beels Glassing in Del Mar can do it right the first time.....
Just my $.02 worth....

I've good experiences with Puka Patches:  http://pukapatch.com/product/puka-patch

although, the guy that repairs my boards sometimes gives me grief about getting them off and clean so that he can fix the hole.  Not that it has ever pulled of paint or anything, but it's a got a good bit of a gooey glue to it.  However, when I have made a two hour drive to some place nice for paddle, when I found a hole, I didn't have to turn around and head home, I patched and paddled.

Helicopter tape would work excellent as a patch.

It's very tough, sticks really well and doesn't leave any glue behind.

Gorilla brand does make a super tough and very sticky clear tape, kinda like packing tape on steroids. i've used it for monofilm sail repair and temporary board patches with no problems.
