I'm wearing ear plugs set deep so speech becomes just noise.  I can still hear people but their conversations are unintelligible.  The upside is it has improve my session satisfaction.  The downside is people that are nice I cannot readily interact with until I pull down my hood and then pull out a ear plug.

If someone is talking to me and I figure it will be negative I just ignore them and if they get my attention and yammer on, I smile and point to my ear and shake my head.  It is very effective mechanism to shut down a surf mullah

Excellent tip there, even if you don't wear earplugs.

If someone says something negative, just say, sorry I can't hear you, I'm wearing earplugs. They'll eventually get tired.

Not likely I'll ever have to use that tactic.

Going on four years now and haven't had one negative encounter.  I love the New England surf scene.

Wow.

I'm as suseptable to this asshattery as most. I can't even predict what I'd do in the same situation.  Somewhere between feign only understanding Serbian and committing a felony.

Respect Clay, you maintained your cool. This guy polluted your session but you just kept surfing. That's really the best response. Push down the urge to inflict pain and just protect your own psyche with stoke. Good on ya.

Lager for me, or is that pilsner, oh I'm not picky.

This might help explain manatee-boy's reluctance for da GoPro.

OOOooo there's your comeback. You could have said "don't worry about it, everyone looks fat on a gopro video, though you might still stand out."

I like manatee boy too.

I'm a big fan of laughing at assholes. It comes easy for me because that's my natural response, but I love the way it sets them off. I got one of the local haole dinks talking to himself a few days ago just by laughing and pointing.

Always remember that it's not great being the guy getting confronted by the asshole, but it'd be 10x worse to BE the asshole.   Their lives are miserable and pathetic, given the energy they have to expend constantly keeping their own flawed worldview intact.  Remembering that helps keep you from getting angry, which in turns makes it easier to see them for what they are, which in turn makes it easier to laugh at them (which I agree with PBill is the best), which in turn makes them react in ways their patheticness becomes even more obvious, which in turn makes it yet more easy to laugh at them...It's a much better spiral to go down (for you, not them) than the anger spiral.

Reminds me of a response I heard a long time ago:  "I'm sorry someone kicked your dog today".
That response messes with their mind.

Good job Clay on keeping cool, and keeping surfing.  Good surfing too.

I run from my condo in SF to the Fort Point and back, and often stop there to watch some of the surfers - if the surf is any good.  Always wanted to catch some waves there, but tricky to get out and back over the rocks and also heard that the surfers were territorial.  Well, your vid showed it!  What an ass that guy was.
If ever I see you out there, I'll yell out to you.  And if I see the manatee man, I will have to wish him well and his car

Thanks for the comments Bean, Badger, SlatchJim, surfinJ, hbsteve, Rakky, supsurf-tw.

Carl thanks for the good words, felt great to read.

Bill you are genius!  That's a prize winning comeback right there, I was laughing out loud.  ;D

I hope by calling this guy out he thinks twice about abusing any more people.  And I really hope, no matter how slim the chance is, that he gets some help and deals with his crap so we can see the real him instead this asshat he is masquerading as.

Rakky I'll keep an ear open for ya, happy to meet up for a session!
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

IPA belly can should be worn as a badge of honor like I do mine. Although I have big fitness plans for this summer. Knee fix on the way.
