As I guy - I enjoy the female form.
However, I do agree that the "Hot chicks" thread has run it's course and should be deleted.

In the early days of the Zone (and the sport) the vast majority of users were male.
The sales of boards in my store were the same.

In recent years it has switched to the exact opposite.
The vast majority of my customers are female.
Easy Rider is the name of my store in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
My name is Warren Currie . . . and we SUP Surf indoors . . . in a shopping mall!

Warren, I totally agree.  That thread has definitely jumped the shark.

So, admin can change the name to something more copasetic and maybe a voluntary "check box" to hide it from view for those who don't want to look at it? I know other forums have that kind of capability. So if it makes you sizzle irregardless, check the box and peace out.

Vote for a new name in a poll?

I still seriously doubt it would increase the female attendance, or keep geezers from acting like twelve year olds with a Playboy mag.

I don't think a name change makes a difference.  It's the content.  No need for a box to check to hide it, either.  Just don't open it.  Still, it's there, and it reflects on the forum and the people who post on that thread.

I'll agree that the posts on the "Hot Chicks" are way overboard and unnecessary, If just photos remained I'd be fine with that. Women are different from men as I am sure a "Hot Dudes" thread wouldn't get many if any posts or views, again that is the world we live in. Men enjoy the female body to a point of obsession (adult magazines, porn, strip clubs, etc) where most women dont have that same visual desire (or act on it as much as men)...... It would be interesting to see the gender and age breakdown of the zone membership.

As someone also very interested in where SUP will be in 10-15 years, I strongly feel we need more women providing feedback, suggestions, innovations, and participation.

I agree with Stoneaxe, what we don't need is censorship and ultra sensitivity (again I don't agree with the Cat Calls/inappropriate comments) but telling the Admin to take it down is not the way to go.

Maybe a "revenge forum" entitled "Hairy, Pot Bellied Guys In Speedos On Stand Up Paddle Boards".  Lots of "bending over" shots.

That would offend all sexes equally.

It would be interesting to see if it had any effect at all on forum membership. My guess is zero to minimal strongly leaning to zero.

Online discussion forums are generally two to one male to female with specific interest forums being much more heavily male dominated. Social networks are more evenly populated depending on focus. Media sharing is male dominated on the video side, female dominated on the photograph side. Social news is male dominated.

Beyond hardwired preferences, the imbalance here probably has a lot more to do with the general kinds of post than with taking offense at a particular element of the forum. The discussions underway are between a bunch of guys. I'm trying to picture any of the various women surfers, SUP racers, downwinders, etc. that I know wanting to join in the conversations I see here. I think you'd need to reboot the entire forum, and keep the geezers off it before you could attract even a few new female members. But in reality, I just don't think there's any demand. If there were, it would exist. It's the simplest thing in the world to build a forum. I could have one up and running in fifteen minutes. So where's the lively forum full of female SUP enthusiasts that are just yearning to join the zone when we take down the pictures?

Personally, I don't care. The notion of deleting it because some people choose to be offended by it or some hypothetical new members might not join seems absurd--it's the web. Billions of views per hour of stuff that would have had people incarcerated 30 years ago. Women in bikinis? Really??

But then again, some of the stuff is cringeworthy, and it's a little pointless. I think we were just trying to keep up with the Aussies on Seabreeze, and they kicked our asses long ago. But if you're looking for balance I could slip on a speedo and get some backside shots of me lumbering to my feet. ...just trying to help.

Well that's one way to get it deleted

Yeah, except it’s not just "women in bikinis". It’s crotch shots, it’s full frontal nudity (since taken down), and it’s postings of overweight women being made fun of. And then of course there are the comments. For myself, I’m not suggesting it be taken down because hypothetical members won’t join or some are offended, although granted I do believe that should be a consideration. I’m suggesting it be taken down because in my opinion, this type of material doesn’t belong on this type of site.

Enjoying this discussion and the comments.

I relayed to my wife the contents of this thread and the HCOSUP thread and my opinion, and her half joking response is, "So are you trying to say I'm fat?"
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

I'm still trying to figure out how on the one hand Kim Kardashian breaks the internet....with primarily women being interested in WTF she is doing is OK but a guy posts a picture of a woman and he is to be vilified. Why the double standard?
I'd like to see anyone posting in the thread use a bit more discretion as to what is appropriate but deleting it because of a few opinions/concerns seems a bit harsh. As to clickbait, tough to define something organically created by users as clickbait.

i dont see vilification, i just see a concern that, if we want women to participate, the zone should not feature a thread that women might find demeaning.

seems killing the thread would be a tiny concession, for an objective that is important.

and, like i say, ive looked, enjoyed, laughed at the thread--but see the good logic that it be taken down.

we certainly arent overwhelmed with female participation around here.

Given the comments from the Admin. this morning, it looks like the hot chicks thread is here to stay. To me this is a mistake and not very forward thinking, but then I’m not the Admin.

I said to someone else just this morning, and I’ll repeat it here. Sometimes I just don’t get Americans. And sorry to lump everyone into one category. I know I shouldn’t do that. But you know it wasn’t all that long ago that Janet Jackson had her famous “nipple slip” at the Super Bowl. There was this huge outcry in the States. To me it was like ‘who cares’. Just not a big deal. But now we have the hot chicks thread on the Zone, which to my way of thinking is a whole lot worse than Janet’s nipple, and people fight to defend it.

There have been comments that at least border on vilification.

Some might find it demeaning, some may not, that's obvious based on all we see around us. Question of opinion no matter how you look at it.

I don't think it's going anywhere.

But is the answer really about deleting the single most viewed post on the site....seems a bit lopsided a response. I'd prefer it was a bit different but I'm not going to push my belief on anyone through censorship. I find that equally as rude as posting or commenting questionable content.
