It's just a matter of time when the big bite is going to happen on the cape. My opinion is that it's also not If but When as the abundance of food for the Great Whites is off the charts and every summer they are reporting record number of new sharks in the area. I recall last summer the cape cod white shark count was well over a hundred newly identified sharks and considering that's just what they happen to report, so that means probably double to triple that amount in the area. Plus with all the seals taking up so much real estate on the beaches they are moving further north on the cape into the bay and then up  the east coast as well as moving further south around islands and into RI waters. I can't imagine the fish population sustaining all those seals in the long haul which means they will eventually migrate somewhere else and so will the sharks. I think Massachusetts needs to reconsider the protection of the seals and start controlling the population now before it gets worse. But that won't happen until a white shark kills someone here and then the blame will get tossed around.

I remember watching a video last year when the Ocearch people spotted a 17-footer in Cape Cod Bay. That's a hell of a fish!

I don't think I'd be comfortable with my son prone surfing alone in deeper water. I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but he and I are much safer on a SUP.

not to worry.... he's not much safer on the beach.
This 12' jumped right onto the beach at Whitecrest Beach in the middle of a hot summer weekend.

They tried to save it but it died.

Had my up close and personal encounter in Chatham on the Outer Beach with a Man in the Grey Suit.

I was proning on my Channel Islands longboard. High levels of anxiety seeing a three foot fin fifty feet away to say the least.

All the prone boards gone now, partly a function of injuries, and partly due to millions of seals.

Prior to the no name storm of '91 you could drive up to 19 miles on the Outer Beach - surfer's paradise. The storm breached the Cape, created an inlet, and the seals started to move in.

Large numbers of seals - Pizza Hut for the great whites.

I feel it is only a matter of time before something truly horrifying happens. I pray that I am wrong!!

wow, that's a lot of seals, serious imbalance there somewhere. Sea lions eat about 6 percent of their body weight per day in fish, crab, and clams. That's about 35 pounds average. by my rough count there's at least 30 thousand sea lions in that video.

Wow that sure could be a problem, never knew there were so many in the area. When I lived in Marblehead back in the late 60's-70's spent quite a bit of time at my girlfriend parents cabin on Pleasant Bay. Spent most of our time on the sunfish or waterskiing in the bay, but would also take the whaler over to the Outer Beach. Never did see another sole on that section of beach and never saw or heard of seals on the beach. Do remember that that water was very cold, you would almost get a ice cream headache when you dove in , but still felt great on a hot summer day and we could always warm up in the dunes.

i find it curious that the seals/sea lions (wouldnt know the difference) are largely absent form martha's vineyard, nantucket and block island.

and i am pleased to have only seen a few seals/sea lions in RI, NJ and Long Island--never a gentleman in gray

Funny, I was just remarking that there were more sea lions than I've ever seen in the water at the Oregon coast with us last weekend. Nothing like this video, but constantly in the lineup and beyond.

It's kind of funny, it seems to me that I've seen fewer seals in RI waters in the last 3 years than the previous 7 or 8. Anyone else feel that way?

Nope I've seen more at 1st beach than in prior years, I also have seals up in the Taunton River near my house where we've barely seen them before.

So something is definitely changing (waters cleaner and more bait fish) but weird seeing seals and dolphins way up my way.

I can't believe there are that many seals on the entire US east coast much less a single beach on Cape Cod.
