Flat-out offshore Downwind Sailing Vids
« on: March 25, 2016, 08:28:01 PM »
I was lucky enough to meet one of the skippers of the Volvo Ocean Race this past week which amazingly they say is "the world’s longest professional sporting event (and leading offshore sailing competition)", born out of the old UK Whitbread Round the World race which started in 1973. The next race in 2017 will be on Volvo Ocean 65 one-design boats, and Hong Kong is bidding for one of the spots to host a leg. He showed us a couple of videos of their boats going flat out in downwind conditions reaching over 35 knots. Being a downwind freak, these really interested me... When they plough through water in front, anything (including people) not tied to the deck gets washed overboard and disappears from view in seconds...

And here is another video of a TP52 Quantum going downwind... Awesome stuff

Amazing videos! They were definitely moving! Not for the faint oh heart or those who have motion sickness. The whole crew hanging over the side must feel like a "E" ticket ride. Thanks for sharing.
