Boaty McBoatface
« on: March 21, 2016, 06:37:06 AM »
I occasionally name my boards. Now this is a hilarious article on the perils of letting the public name a ship. The Brits have commissioned a $300 million ship and started an online poll to name it. The most popular name by far is “Boaty McBoatFace”. Totally worth a read for a good laugh. Even a whale gets a goofy name here.

Hey.. that name represents the choice of many millions of ppl, many who've never voted for a boat before.
If the scientists don't go with it?  There's gonna be riots.

I love it! It's like these scientists have never actually observed the Internet. What kind of name did they expect to come out of that process?  They should be glad the name wasn't totally obscene!

Here in the UK the nation love the way this episode has gone, and the general opinion seems to be that this is a fine example of British humour. So I suspect that the name will stick. And that sadly this will be the last time anywhere in the world that the public will ever get to name anything of this sort. This boat is about to become a national treasure, and the most famous boat in British history. Schoolchildren might not be able to tell you what HMS Victory was, but they certainly will know this boat, and the merchandising opportunities and general feeling of goodwill to science surely cannot be missed.

Those were good for a morning of laughs. I'm personally fond of "Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing"!

This reminds me of a friend's sea kayak that is known to everyone as "Leaky Weathercocker".

The internet has found its calling.  It gives me the greatest pleasure to know that there is a whale out there named Mr. Splashypants and that a research vessel may soon to be sailing under the name Boaty McBoatface.  This falls in the people are awesome category.

I especially enjoyed the woman who objected to naming the whale Mr. Splashy Pants:

“Voting is being extended, supposedly due to popular demand (and perhaps vain hope on Greenpeace's part that their whale will get a decent name). Do your bit and save a whale's self respect.”

Guess what, the whale doesn't care if you name him Namura, Ocean Traveler, Finny-Fin-Fin, or Big Boris Barfbarg.

Actually, whale might give each other names, but they don't give a damn what we call them:

Admin is right re Mr Splashypants.....since then every internet poll to name something has a caveat to say the CEO will take the end decision....or something like that. It would be great if the boat did get the Boatyface name but alas not likely.
