SUP storage in hot garage
« on: March 16, 2016, 12:12:35 PM »
Hello all!

Just got my first SUP this winter. (SUPATX Scout that I got on clearance)

I live south of Houston, Texas so it gets hot in the summer. Most days will be in the mid 90's. My garage is the best place, size wise to keep/store my SUP. I'm building a rack system into a side wall for it.

It will not ever be in direct sun light.

If the garage is going to be over 100 degrees, is that too hot? Would storing in a bag be the right way to go? I know if its in a bag it has to be 100 percent dry before going in the bag or there would be mold and other gross stuff.

Just looking for tips from people who might have already been in this situation. Of course taking care of the board is the first priority.

(I'd love to store it inside my house but we just don't have the room for an 11'6" board on any of the walls)

Leave it out of the bag, 100 degrees is no big deal.

Like Pono said, no bag should be fine. Does the garage have any ventilation at all?

You need to install one of these in your garage to keep a mist of cool water on your board.

No really, you need to do this.  :D

I leave 4 SUPs in my storage shed in the Caribbean and never had an issue with heat.  I do store my carbon paddles in the house.

The one problem I did have was when I stored a board away in board bag before it was completely dry..some of the paint dimpled

ford,  No sweat ..so to speak.  I've kept all manner of boards in couple of 40' Kabul holding cells for 20yrs. It's get pretty hot in there!  ..'just not inside your Suburban – exposed to direct solar gain.

Hell, DJ.. We thought you were driving a micro-SUV rather than a Rover because you were on budget?!  It's probably the only 4-wheels you could get in your shed.  Congrats on a art nice collection!

(Those spinners work; I have used two for 30yrs to vent empty attics at my business ..good bit cheaper/more quiet vs electric.)

Woah DJ. That's a lot of yellah in there! I'm told if you mix up the colors a bit, it will seem like there are less of them..

Ford- I used to live in League City...typical subdivision attached but unconditioned garage. I never had a heat problem. Direct sunlight outside is pretty much your only weather issue to be concerned over around there.

David John just won at garages. Dang. Just got my first decent fat bike last week. Good times

DJ, you oughta consider Naish for your next purchase...
I hear they make a nice board.

DJ--be sure to take a photo of your new Toyota parked in there once you get it.

In regard to heat in the storage space, when it gets really hot (or cold) I just move my boards into the corners.  They always stay about ninety degrees.
