Easy open fix for the Liftsup handle.
« on: February 24, 2016, 07:26:29 AM »
The only problem I've found with the Liftsup handle on my new Flow is that it can't be opened while wearing mitts.

So I made a quick fix with a piece of foam, a washer and some 1/8" nylon braid. It works great. There is a small loop sticking out but it's so thin you don't notice it when you step on it.

I may eventually drill a hole through the top of the handle and put the string through there. Then you could stow the string inside the hole, but I'm not sure I want to go drilling holes just yet.

these handles pale in comparison to the blue planet ones.  i can't understand why the entire sup universe hasn't gone with them.  it's ... inexplicable.

Can you replace the handle on these without taking out the entire box?

I don't see how, unless there is a trick to removing it that I can't see.

Yup, the Blue Planet handles are great, probably less expensive for manufacturers also.

Badger, another approach would be to wrap a strip of light weight, two sided Velcro around the top of the handle, just long enough to provide a pull tag.

The handle fits so snugly into the slot that there is no room for a strip of velcro or strap of any kind. It kind of snaps into place.

Sorry for the lame suggestion Badger, I didn't realize they were that tight.  It looks like your solution will get through the cold months anyhow.  BTW, I can only get two fingers into my FCS handle with 5mm gloves so I kind-of feel your pain.

I tried a King's Wedge last week. Those handles are really small.

i like the velcro idea--my gloves tend to stick to the scratchy (not furry) side of the velcro, when i attack my leash--bet if you just stick a small piece of scratchy velcro to the top, exposed side of the handle, you could just touch it with a glove and pull the handle out that way.

My foam plug didn't last long. The foam tore in half during the in house testing.

But, looking closer, I noticed there are two little holes in each end of the handle. I ran a string through, made a loop and this seems to work alright. The string doesn't interfere with the handle closing all the way like it would if I just tied it around it.

I just had another great idea. The handle makes a great place to put a card with your name, address and phone number. That way if your board blows out to sea from a broken leash on a windy day, it can be returned. I'm going to make a card and laminate it with some clear packing tape and put it in a ziploc bag until I come up with something better.

+1

I get the idea behind the Liftsup handle but I owned a board with one and absolutely grew to hate it for several reasons. It was uncomfortable to carry a distance, sand and saltwater would make it stick more often than not and it was tough to grab when trying to get out of the water, especially when timing is everything.

The Blue Planet handles are awesome but even the more traditional handles with "ledges" in them are much better too.
