I don't often go on a SUP touring...but when I do, I map the distances using the Google Earth path distance feature.

...while drinking a Dos Equis.

p.s. I couldn't believe how long some of my rides were.

I'm going to borrow the hubby's fitbit or better yet,  just put my phone in the dry pack.   I think my endurance is pretty good if I take my time.   Now I'm curious

Hmm.   I may not have mentioned what a beginner I am.   It's hard to judge distances when I'm going back and forth at Carpinteria.   Sounds like something to work up to.

Then staying at Newport Dunes is a very good choice because you have an easy place to paddle right by your camp.  Being a beginner, you may find everything you need to have a great time right there around that little bay.  There are fun places to eat nearby, interesting places to explore around all the docked yachts just outside of the little bay and all of it is smooth and protected.  If you plan to go far and are not a strong paddler, be sure to head out going west, towards the ocean (to your left as you leave the bay), that way you can have an easy, downwind paddle back to camp when you return.

Just updating to say we are here at Newport Dunes and so far it has been great.   Paddled 2.5 hours solid in the nature preserve.   We think it was about 4.5 miles round trip.   Seemed like there was a bit of current both ways ☺️ and with all the clouds it got windy on the way back,  but great fun.

Question -  can we launch a board and a kayak at the Fire Department beach at Corona just outside the Newport Harbor jetty?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can launch both boards and kayaks from the Coast Guard parking lot/bay beach in Corona Del Mar - near the mouth of the harbor on Bayside Drive.

Its an easy launch point if you get a good parking spot.  Around 5 pm (after the summer, which is always crowded),
it can get difficult to get a parking spot as there are often groups of outrigger canoe teams that launch there.

The Coast Guard / Harbor Patrol beach mentioned before is at 1901 Bayside Dr.,
Corona del Mar.  If the parking lot is full, unload at the gate to the beach.  Then park on the street.
This location is 1 mile to the ocean.  On a nice day, at the end of the jetties turn left
For the scenic route.  That will put you off the Corona del Mar State Beach.  Levity was paddling in this area a couple of weeks ago, and was between the swim buoys and shore.  The lifeguard told him that he couldn't paddle within the marked swim area.  I mention this because they may not let you launch directly into the ocean from the state beach.
The Coast Guard beach is my usual launch point.  I'll probably be there Wednesday & Thursday. Mornings, this week.

Thanks.  Maybe before we unload at the state Beach we'll just ask.   Maybe the problem was being in the swim buoys?
