Unproductive day
« on: February 10, 2016, 09:08:19 PM »
I'm sure somebody somewhere had some good surf today. I went out early at Kanaha, looked good from the beach. Got out to the lineups just as a HUGE bomb came through. Not a lot of people out, and most of them got over it, but jeez. Some of the guys were a little inside, I was way outside, looking things over. It was flat out nervewracking. The midsize stuff was on the weak side, so we had to go inside to catch it, and then you'd look over your shoulder and YIKES. I went for a couple, missed them mostly from nerves I think, and then sprinted back out. Most of the guys looked like longtailed cats in a room full of rockers. After a lot of paddling around I thought "this ain't fun" went over to the left, paddled hard for a midsize, and caught it, rode it to the end and just kept going for the beach.

I thought "that's the shortest session I've ever had."

Back to the house, picked up Diane and her Volt, stuck my 9.0 custom Foote on it and headed for S-Turns. When we got there everyone was getting out. They said "the wind is up and the waves are all closeouts."
After Kanaha it looked pretty good to me, so I paddled out with great confidence. I got knocked off the board just before I got outside, and I was kind of lackadaisical about getting up and getting out. Got mowed and the extreme turbulence was a big surprise. Must have been all that current and the long period of the waves. In the rinse cycle my board found me and the fins slashed my arm and foot. Little nick on the foot, what looked like a big, deep gash on the arm. So I went in. Instant revision of the shortest session ever.

Rinsed off in the shower while Diane did the "concerned wife" dance around me. Actually, she's pretty good about these things--she's had a lot of practice, if it's not arterial spurts she's fairly mellow. One of the longboarders there got out the world's most impressive first aid kit, handed me a scrubbing sponge presoaked in betadine, then an impressive, huge waterproof bandage. Must be either an EMT or a tattoo artist. Wouldn't take payment. Thanks, bud, I owe you one.

The "gash" turned out to be more like a glancing rip. No big deal, no stitches required. Probably out for a day or two. Looks worse than it is.

Went to Mala's and had their Big Fat Greek Salad and some Calamari, couple of glasses of Malbec. So I can't really say it was unproductive, just not what I planned.

That's a gnarly story! I enjoyed reading it. But I don't enjoy injuries. Hope you heal up quick, sir. You caught a good wave today...productive!
p.s- I would love to rediscover Maui on sup. Last visit was around 2000. Didn't start sup for real til 2011.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

I guess they can happen pretty fast.  I remember when I was on the inflatable, my arm felt a little funny, but not painful.  In the shower, I was soaping and plunged my finger deep into a large hole on the back of my arm.  I looked in the mirror, and saw some fasciculating muscle in a deep, fairly long cut.

It never really hurt much, I just kept soaping it out with my finger at shower time and eventually it healed.

Several months ago, I had a deep area of flesh punched out of the side of my knee, a clean circle and I have no idea how it happened.  Also didn't hurt much, just washed it but it took forever to heal and is still red.

at first i assumed it was typical PB: ugly-but-works-good: packing tape and paper towel--nice to see a proper bandage on you.

glad it won't keep you down for long.

Nope, open air. If I get in the water I'll do something waterproof. Lots of staph infections here. superficial, but could have been so much worse. Just missed my head.

please post pics of the waterproof rigup you build!

looks clean and on its way--i keep hydrogen peroxide in my car and irrigate any cuts thoroughly--our cold water harbors fewer bad microbes, but still gotta be careful--knock wood

Get a real problem!
Glancing blow is right...barely reached the road rash stage...;-)

Here is a *real* fin skin ripper...long board kook dropped in on me and fell making me jump off my board and try to grab it before it T-boned him...
ER doc is a surfer/standup paddler...put the fear of god in me about staph, though...and, the area it happened in is probably the one of the most environmentally clean and university tested areas on the coast...

FYI, I was told to get rid of the Hydrogen Peroxide...Bactine (benzalkonium chloride) is the preferred first aid antiseptic...
Mahalos...{:~)

Nice. That's what I thought I had out in the water--it looked like a meat slice, not a glancing swipe. I was lucky.
