After a couple years off, the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big-Wave Invitational returns

It has just been announced that this Wednesday the legendary Eddie Aikau Big-Wave Invitational will return to the waters of Waimea Bay.The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau will GO this Wednesday, February 10, at Waimea Bay.  On Sunday evening, after issuing a yellow alert, official contest organizers gave the go-ahead to run the celebrated event. Organizers gave the event the green light early this-morning after consulting the latest round of forecasting models. This will be the 9th “Eddie” in 31 years. The event was last held in December of 2009, and was won by California’s Greg Long.

Organizers anticipate a solid day of surf that will meet the event’s strict wave face height requirement of 40 feet, with favorable light winds in the morning, turning light trades by afternoon. “It has taken us six years to pull the trigger, but this is the first swell we have seen that is truly lining up as an Eddie swell,” said Event Director Glen Moncata.

Moncata and the organizing team continue to confer with event patriarch George Downing, who has made the call on every event since its inception.  “As George has famously said, ‘The Bay Calls the Day’ and that will be Wednesday,” added Moncata.

“At this point it appears that the swell will peak during the overnight hours from Wednesday,” Surfline’s lead forecaster, Kevin Wallis, told the WSL, “with the largest waves during daylight hours showing late Wednesday and early Thursday. Model guidance puts this in the same ballpark as the swell from this past Friday.”

The past few days have produced some gnarly swells coming into the North Shore; so gnarly, that even Kelly Slater couldn’t paddle out. If the swell continues in its current pattern, we should be seeing some absolutely massive waves for the contest dates.

The 2015/2016 invitees:

Aaron Gold, Albee Layer, Bruce Irons, Clyde Aikau, Dave Wassel, Garrett McNamara, Grant Baker, Greg Long, Ian Walsh, Jamie Mitchell, Jamie O’Brien, Jeremy Flores, John John Florence, Kala Alexander, Kelly Slater, Kohl Christensen, Makua Rothman, Mark Healey, Nathan Fletcher, Noah Johnson, Peter Mel, Ramon Navarro, Reef McIntosh, Ross Clarke-Jones, Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia and Takayuki Wakita

Official alternates:

Looks like its off again, or at least back on hold

Eddie Aikau big-wave contest now a 'no-go' due to delay in swell

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The most-anticipated surf contest on Oahu that organizers said would “go” on Wednesday is now a “no-go."

After checking buoy readings, it appears that the swell is behind and conditions were not ideal enough for the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational to proceed as planned, event director Glen Moncata said. But while the holding period ends Feb. 29, there's still a chance that another big swell could help push wave heights up to Eddie levels.

Tens of thousands of residents and visitors were expected to jam North Shore roads and beach parks for a chance to catch a glimpse at some of the world's best big-wave surfers catch monster waves at one of the world's best surf spots.

Organizers on Monday announced the event would "go" after looking at forecast models. Based on those forecasts, it would’ve been the first time since December 2009 that wave heights would be high enough -- with wave faces of at least 40 feet -- and consistent enough at Waimea Bay for the contest to be given the green light.

And preparations kicked into high gear Tuesday, with the city putting North Shore road work on hold, adjusting city bus schedules to accommodate more riders, and pledging to ticket and tow illegally parked cars along Kamehameha Highway.

The competition was supposed to get underway as early as 8 a.m. and end as late as 4:30 p.m.

"It has taken us six years to pull the trigger, but this is the first swell we have seen that is truly lining up as an Eddie swell," said event director Glenn Moncata.

Moncata and the organizing team also are conferring with event patriarch George Downing, who has made the call on every event since it began.

The surf contest was founded in 1984, and has only been held nine times since then.
