Broken Magic Paddle, Feral is out 4 awhile.
« on: February 07, 2016, 11:04:40 AM »
After 2 months of beatings honing my skills with little or no reward wave-wise, in overhead to double-overhead closeouts at my beachbreak (no car for those new to my story); the sand finally gets good again. Now the 3rd good head-high to slightly overhead hollow day, 2 good waves and I snap the paddle that Robert from Blue Planet Surf gifted me. Maybe it hit the board underwater, I didn't feel anything, other than a sudden lessened tugging. Don't know when I'll SUP again. Traded my regular surfboard for a decent wetsuit, maybe I'll sacrifice my back regular prone surfing the SUP. One good wave is better than none. Man, I sacrificed in this shorebreak for the privilege of SUP'ing better and better. I was just smiling yesterday, cause after 6 mos. SUP'ing, I can go out and have fun in 15-20kt. offshores with overhead sets, then handle the same strength onshores later on my 6' 10". Grinning and catching waves. Now I snap the paddle. Can't believe my luck.

I'm surprised anything lasts very long in that beach break.....looks like your in a foot of water in that pic. That's probably fixable until you get another.

Bummer about the paddle.  I love that first shot though!  Yes, you can fix it, I think the paddle I sent you was already repaired once, so it can be fixed again.

Robert Stehlik! Jim K! Eastbound! Surfercook! Stoneaxe! All the other bros! I'm headed to sketchy TJ river area tomorrow for fibra de carbono y resinas. No worries, I know the area and I'm crazy! Jajaja! Thanks everyone. I was so down right after breaking that, cause it's sentimental to me too. My first real paddle. Now I'm psyched on trying to get materials and get it fixed right away. Thanks for the pick-me-up! Hope it holds up when I fix it.

Dowel
Sandpaper
Hot Glue

Find 12" dowel as close to ID of shaft sand to fit
Apply Hot Glue (Liberally) to one end Insert into shaft
 LET harden

repeat on other end and push both shafts together Adjust to get blade orientation correct and...
Viola a repaired Paddle shaft

Hope this helps

You talking carbon dowel? I don't think that would last very long otherwise. I couldn't build a wooden paddle shaft that would last.

I'd start with a 6" dowel (wood) and do what Jim said, (that's mostly just to get it properly lined up) then do a 12" wrap of 4oz and then a 6" wrap on top of that centered over the break. You still want some flex or it will snap again.

I've used both Carbon and wood dowels all are still holding up as far as I know.

Hey Feral,

Sorry to hear about your paddle, that's no fun.

I have some carbon pieces and epoxy supplies I can ship to you...

I re-joined this carbon pole the other day, carbon tube inside as a dowel and some carbon "tape" on the outside for good measure, it's probably stronger than it was before I cut it:

Here is a how to video using aluminum as a dowel:
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

I was in a hurry.  I was going fishing that day, but wanted my paddle for the next days surf, so at 5 am in the morning, I  just lined up the two halve's of my paddle with 5 minute epoxy, wrapped 6 oz fiberglass 4" wide tape around the shafts 4 times, then used epoxy resin, wrapped the hole thing with saran wrap and it has held for over 8 months..  Not very professional, looked kind of ugly, but I just put electrical tape on it, and still functions.. I know its not supposed to hold without a plug, and I expect it to break again, a tad heavy, but I dont notice it, but hey, I was back in the water right away.    I should have done it the right way and will the next time, when I have time... The only thing for sure now, is I have more than one paddle with me in the car when I go surfing.

Got myself to a sketchy part of TJ for my materials and repaired the broken paddle. My repair went more for strength than beauty or weight savings, and it's definitely a chunk uglier and heavier, but I'm stoked! Here are some photos of the barrio, repair and one of the good waves I got today. Thanks everyone for the encouragement and advice on this, and the sand has got good here, maybe I can start progressing a little faster if I get more than one good wave a week!

That wave you're riding doesn't look sketch! Looks perfect! Good ya got repaired w/no drama.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

I really looked at that sequence again. You throw alot of water and your turns are super aggressive and smooth. Nice ride! I'd be grinnin' too. Glad you got the Isle Pro Carbon fierpaddle I shipped out, Shawn. it was cool to put the thing to use. That thing served me well and it was my first carbon fiber. I thought it was the greatest! I will admit the Kialoa Methane feels alot lighter and quicker though. The Isle has an oval shaft at least. I really prefer that.
