Miles to paddle in 2016
« on: December 31, 2015, 06:02:59 PM »
Bulky's thread inspired me, my resolution this year is to log the miles I paddle and aim for a goal. I have a distinct advantage being retired and living in two of the best places for downwinding, where ten miles a day is pretty easy--it's more or less one downwinder. Of course I don't get to go every day, and there isn't wind every day, but I want to add in flatwater miles too. I need some training time. So my goal for 2016 is 2500 miles. I don't mean to set too high a level and discourage anyone else, I think if you're not living in a wind tunnel then 500 miles is a great goal, and 1000 is pretty amazing in flatwater, but I do live in downwind heaven, so my goal needs to be aggressive.

So put up your number and let's check in every so often. I'm going to use motion-X for the time being.

7 miles average every day for 365 days?

It's not the miles you put in, it's what you put into the miles.

Do 7 miles a day at 90+% of maximum heart rate and I'll be impressed. 7 miles a day at 70% of max HR risks sounding like a person with a lot of leisure time finding something to do. How about training for, and doing, the M2O? That really would be a challenge, and you have all the resources available to you to do it, unlike most of us. Be our inspiration!

I confess that my goal doesn't really require much more than that I do what I've been doing and just be a little more religious about it. I had a lot of double and triple downwinder days at Hood River last year that's 18 or 27 miles a day. You're right, though I honestly think I could do an M2O anytime--just keep paddling. Everyone might be gone home and the lights will be off when I hit the beach, but I'd get there.

I am indeed a person with a lot of leisure time, but I probably go at 80 percent, fifty percent of the time.

I'll be 69 this year. And this year will be training for next year. the big 7-0. If I'm still on the right side of the dirt that's going to be a serious effort to do wacky stuff.

Yes, you are doing extremely well for your age. Who is the oldest person to have done the M2O? That would be quite a title to hold.

Well, I have never tracked my miles but some weeks I get 30 hours of water time. Some of that is standing wave surfing so logging miles of ground won't work. I need a Log of some kind on the hull. I reckon on a river surf session the board must do at least 30 miles on the Plane.

My usually workout run will be at least 10k..

I'd say on any average year I closk easily over 1000 miles but lets find out..

My goal is 2600 miles :)

I'm going for 1,000kms again (around 621 miles). I fell around 100kms short in 2015 after making this in 2013 and 2014.. Too busy with work and kids to do more, so I think this is achievable and a balanced goal.

To be honest - Im not gonna set a goal as it sort of goes against my philosophy a wee bit but I am gonna track my year.

Indeed, goals are always good (show me when it's not?)
I agree with the number 2500 - but I will be using kilometers (that's about 1550 miles).

Most of my paddling currently takes place on flat water, with only about 5% on DW runs.

Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: What's the point of working so hard making money if we cannot enjoy something as wonderful as the ocean?

Goal for me is to try and be in the fullness of every moment on the water. So it is a goal but not a future goal.

I usually go on time not distance.. quite often my entire paddle will be against the flow so too many variables to give an exact mileage but not exact duration.. If the island comes to the paddler not the paddler paddles to the island, then time is distance :)

I could probably set that record, if it's measured at the finish, and I enter the next one to give me enough time.

I'm beginning to think they no longer support the app.  Mine crashed all through iOS 9.1.  Works again with 9.2 but I am up against the 300 track limit.  I could delete tracks but what is the point of the app then?

2500, PB?!?  That's amazing. I'd like to do 1,000mi again, but I'm already thinking El Niño might make that challenging. Only got two days in so far this year due to conditions.
