14' cork sandwich build
« on: November 24, 2015, 02:39:46 PM »
This is going to be a first for me doing a sandwich over a foam core. With some very helpful tips from are Hawaii friend who has been bumped off the forum.

14' x 24.5" cork sandwich. It will be 4oz under and 6 over with a carbon cap.

Alright Charlie! I've done a few. Makes a great looking board. Can't wait to see the results. I think you'll find the cork is surprisingly easy to work with.

Say I forgot to ask. So does this mean you're vacuum bagging now?

OH man, can't wait to see this coming together.

Oh, and I'm working on my lam and hand shaping skills with a 6'6" "maxi Simmons" proner right now. Maybe I'll post a thread in random. ;)

Cool Charlie.

Tell us a bit more about the design and what you want out of the cork?

Couple of quick questions.  How thick is the cork sandwich?  And, how does it compare to divinylcell in density/weight?

this will be 2mm sandwich all the number are on the net i can't remember of the top of my head, it depends on what particular one you are using. The main benefit of a sandwich is giving you a lot more strength and ding resistance from the skin. I have been vac bagging for years just mainly in moulds and not on foam core's.

Cool, maybe if I wait I'll just find out from your posts, but I assume that cork is much more flexible and stretchy than PVC foam(?)  Are you able to wrap rails and that kind of thing without too much cutting out wedges?

As for bagging, I have found that my vacuum does not like having a lot of air flowing through it for a long time, so if I open a bleeder valve to have a gentle vacuum with the pump on all the time and not crush the EPS core, I start to lose oil from my pump.  It's best with a vacuum reservoir so you can have the vacuum cycling on only when needed.

The great thing about cork is its ease of use. And if you do have to fill in a spot it disappears magically. Wraps good, too. Hope you don't mind the pic, supuk ;D

i am using a twin gast pump with breathers however it is designed to run non stop and they do not contain oil like a lot of pumps advertised for bagging.

no pics of the sticky bit but her is a few with the bottom laminated with peel ply and in the bag and a quick check to make sure the rocker is correct.
