 You do the hokie pokie.

And that's what's it all about.

Here is another video from our SUP Tips series:

SUP Tips: Making your board go in a straight line.

These are the techniques demonstrated in the video:

1) Shaft angle: holding your shaft straight- perpendicular to the water

2) Blade angle: angling the blade slightly inward towards the board

3) Blade path: starting the stroke slightly away from the rail nd pulling the paddle in towards the feet, ending the stroke close to rail by your feet.

Great info!   I can paddle fairly straight myself but when I try to explain to a friend who is just coming out for the first time I'm never able to explain it b/c I'm never exactly sure how I'm going (relatively) straight.  These are great explanations.
Thanks!

So I have a lot of problems with the bottoms of my feet cramping up, or just getting really sore.

It's slowly getting a little better, but it's hard to go more than 2-3 miles without beach breaks to get off and walk around, stretch, etc.

I'm fairly new to SUP, and I know a lot of the cramping early on was from not being relaxed on the board, but now that I'm getting more relaxed I'm also pushing myself to go further and faster, in turn putting more stress on the tootsies. Trying to stretch them on the board only does so much.

I have the same problem when snowboarding, and it's always a really tough one to stretch out.

Anybody have any good exercises, stretches to help with this issue?

What sometimes helps is just sitting to take a break - and moving your toes around in the water.  Also changing up stances from parallel to regular to goofy helps relieve numbing toe and foot pressure.

For SB make sure your edging is on point and you have a proper fit with no pressure points.  Binding straps can also cause pressure points - so keep an eye out for that.  Your feet should feel very comfortable in soft boots so something seems a bit off there.  Most times you can pinpoint the pressure points that are causing your feet to tense up and cramp.

Seems to often come down to simple TOTW - and the foot soreness and cramping just disappear.   :)

Appreciate the post.  I mean no disrespect or criticism by this response.

My understanding and experience with arch "support" is that it is similar to binding the feet or walking with crutches, and very destructive to foot health and proper function.  Many of us have feet that are in such a state of atrophy that it hurts to walk or run without these crutches.  After 30 years of wearing thick soled sneakers and boots with heels and arch "support" I spent several years making the transition to barefoot.  Now that my feet are mostly repaired it hurts to wear shoes with arches or heels and thick rigid soles.

Robert thanks for posting, the video tips are always super helpful.  I don't wear flip flops or slippahs for the same reason, I need to grip the flip flop with my toes to prevent them from falling off and it inhibits or changes my natural gait.  These Vivobarefoot Ulysses are the most foot friendly sandals I have found:

Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

A minimalistic zero drop thin rubber tread is all we use for HIIE running nowadays.  Back in the old thick cushioned days - we could not run down steep trails without excruciating knee pain - and had no idea of the texture of the ground.  Nowadays we feel every rock and root - which increases proprioception and our balance tremendously.  With stronger arches and soleus muscles - running down hills fast is super fun.

We do however enjoy standing on cushioned flip flops for pure foot comfort -> since it feels like standing on a cushy soft pillow.   :)
