Rail Cracks
« on: October 13, 2015, 03:28:30 PM »
I noticed these after last week's session. I'm fairly comfortable attempting a ding, but I'm not sure about these cracks.

Does this appear to be a fairly basic repair or is is something that I need to take to a pro?

Put the board in the sun and see if they bubble. Also, if you are game, put your mouth on the areas and suck to see if they are sealed or all the way into the foam and the foam is leaking.

In any event, you could patch with rail tape or repair glue if the board is still water tight and keep using it. However, I would plan on taking it in for a pro repair.

Those look like compression fractures. How are you strpping your board down? Not a difficult fix. You could do it yourself.  I would but only because i want to do my own. If you dont  plan on doing more beyond  this I'd  have someone  else do it.

That top photo looks like your board is growing hair.  That is a very ominous sign.

I had some rail cracks from my paddle and did not see any evidence they had compromised the water integrity of the hull and let them go. A month later the deck was a bit mushy and it turned out water had gotten in and caused some delamination of the deck. Repairing that was a couple hundred $$.

Morals of this story:
(1) Repair anything that even remotely looks like it could let water in
(2) Use rail tape and edge guard on the paddle blade
(3) Don't paddle like a dufus

I whack the hell out of my rails. I've never done damage like that, spider cracks in the hot coat, paint chips, but never anything that would let water in. That doesn't look like a hit from a paddle.

You never want to use ratchet straps.....someone I know had the rails of his brand new Bark crushed when a friend cranked down on a ratchet strap.

Stonaxe, I think you nailed the cause of the damage. Before the FL trip, I'd only made local trips with my board on the top rack, so I had only used bungee cords to secure the board. When I packed for FL, I let my fear of interstate speed compel me to apparently strap the board down too tightly.
I had to have done it going down, because I put the board in the truck bed on the return trip, which means that the damage was done before I spent three days surfing.

I'm not certain, but I don't think the board absorbed water. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

Thanks for all the input.

So what is the fix for this? Open up the crack a bit and then fix?

From the picture it looks like its cracked through the glass so dish out the area with a sander just down to the foam where the cracks concentrate.  Make sure everything is dry underneath, then patch with a couple layers of 6oz using epoxy resin.  The patch should overlap at least a couple inches around the damage.  Once the patch is dry, sand it back to original shape.

+1

Then install some RSpro...wouldn't have prevented this but will cover up the repair and prevent future paddle whacks from causing problems.

Just realized you said you used bungees before...don't do that either. Get yourself some good straps, a heavy pair of the simple camlocks are fine but I love the kanu-locks...secure from opportunistic thieves, very easy to used, soft on the board but has two stainless cables. Best there is out there IMO. I regularly travel 50-60 miles at speeds up to 75mph with no problem. Worth every penny.

Thanks for the info. I'll post after I attempt the repair. May have to tape over it for a while, report has shoulder high swells inbound Sunday or Monday.
