what is the biggest change in board size you have undertaken?
« on: October 08, 2015, 05:11:50 PM »
Just got my new ride its a  2012,  9'6" used all wave. Rode it today . I could stand and paddle it ok, just barely  though at first.    but it got choppy pretty quickly  and I didn't get any real waves. Still I only fell like 5 or 6 times. The board is  a foot shorter than my c-4,  2 inches narrower than my kings and 25 liters smaller in volume. seems like a pretty big drop in size at least it felt that way. I have no doubts i all master it soon.  so what are the biggest  changes in volume, width and length, you guys have  tried.

You should get comfortable with the AW pretty easily.  They are sweet rides, I'm sorry I sold mine.  Did you buy the 9'6 that was just for sale in the classifieds here on the Zone?

My biggest jump down was one that I later regretted.  Went from a 8'4 X 30 down to a 7'2 X 28 Hokua, had a pretty tough time.

I made my first big jump to the same Allwave ;D

I went from 11'2 x 36 at 230 Liter Avanti
         to the  9'6 x 32 at 173 Liter Allwave
47 liter drop, 1 ft 6in  shorter, 4" narrower

It felt rock solid in a very short time.

My first board was 10'6" x 30" x 180L and I demoed the 7'6" x 29" x 103L Phoenix v2.  The first paddle out was very humbling to say the least but after a little time I was able to paddle around without falling.  Second session was much better and thus began my obsession with smaller boards.

Probably when I went from the 293L inflatable Red Paddle Mega to the 150-160L or so Vernor.  Oddly enough, it wasn't that big a deal balance wise, I got used to it reasonable quickly.

At my size and weight, though, every 10L lower than the Vernor is a milestone in new balance.

I am still catching up to the 134L Prowave, but I think it is actually harder to balance than it's displacement suggests because it is designed for surf shape, not balance.

From my 11-2 Blend to the 9-0 South County. 2'-2" shorter but 4" wider at 34". Not sure of the volume change but i think they were probably pretty close. I fell in love with the South County from the very second I 1st stood on it. More stable than the 11-2 and far better on the waves. The very 1st day I was doing stuff I had only dreamed of prior to that. I got lucky. I knew I wanted to go shorter and was looking around....thinking I might need to go custom. I had a shape and size in my head. Then I saw exactly what I had in mind on the SC website. None out here, couldn't demo...bought it anyway. I still love surfing it.

10'10" x 32" Naish Nalu to a no-name 8'6" x 30".  It was not a smooth transition at all!  I got the hang eventually, but wasn't having enough fun.  Ultimately sold it to get a Starboard Drive. That was the board that really helped me dial in my wave game.

A couple years ago, (at 205lbs) a jump from my 10' - 162L Icon to 7'10" - 110L Phoenix v2 made me realize that volume is a smaller part of the equation, distribution is key.  That same year, after a summer of riding my Phoenix, I had the opportunity to try an 8'2" StunGun at 99L, way more challenging but an unbelievable wave riding board.  These days (unfortunately few and far between these last couple of weeks) you'll find me riding my JL B&B at 9'6" - 117L which is super stable for its fairly low volume due mostly to the wider tail configuration.

I have a over 200 liter downwinder and a 120 liter surf shape that can be used on the same day. Surf session in the
morning and a down winder in the afternoon. Its not a problem unless the board is too small.

I have the advantage of being able to test my limits on my wife's boards.  I hopped off my 9-5, 33" Hammer down to her 9' x 31" North Pacific rounded pin and looked like a complete noob.  I was probably 250# at the time and the loss of width in the tail was a real problem for me then.  I'm able to surf her 8-10 x 31 hammer ok now, even in some chop, but I prefer a more stable board to relax and have fun on.  I'm not out there to prove anything to anyone.

I have a friend at Doho that went from a 7-10 to a longboard shape around 10 foot he's been on for a couple years now.  Night and day difference in wave count, surfing, fun, everything.

9'2"x28" (120L) to a 12'6"x28" Jav

9'2"x28 (120L) to a 8'3"x27 (90L)

8'3"x27 (90L) to a 7'4"x28" (85L)

Have a 14'x26" Jav thrown somewhere in there.

Biggest jump/challenge was the 9'2" to 8'3".  Not only size, but volume.  It was a tough learning curve, but worth it.  Going from the 8'3" to the 7'4" wasn't as hard as I thought it might be.

Went from a 12' x 31 (230L) Yolo Cruiser to my 8'11 X 31 (150L) Allwave.  Transistion was a breeze.  For the next step down I think I'll focus more on width, volume and rail thickness over length.

Changes in volume and length do not always give the expected results. When I drop down from my 9'0 X 148 liter Tabou to my 8'8" X 123 liter Starboard Air Born, the Air Born is way more stable, even though they both have the exact same stated width (though for 2016, Starboard is calling the width on the Air Born 32", while previously they called the exact same board 31.5"). Performance wise, I think of the Tabou as being the smaller of the two boards, and the Air Born as my board for choppy/windy days.
While 4" in length and 25 liters in volume is not going to win the award for the biggest change, it might be relevant to the discussion that a reasonable sized change like that can sometimes lead to different, or in this case opposite, changes in performance from what one might expect.
