SimSUP lovers what do you ride on good waves?
« on: October 06, 2015, 08:17:08 AM »
Hi, so I have a 8'8" 140L simsup that pushes my limit of balance and paddlability, I love the way the board rides and have a great time in glassy smaller waves.  If there is some surface bump I struggle to stay on the board and I'm not sure how I would manage in anything bigger than head high.  When the waves are overhead and good I usually ride a prone shortboard.

The shortboard looking SUPs that I have tried didn't feel like shortboards to me.  My SimSUP feels like it's prone cousin, same as my JL black and blue machine feels and rides like a traditional noserider.

So I am wondering what other SUP is out there that you love to ride on good waves?
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Aloha Clay,
Even though I have more traditional shortboard SUP designs under 9' that work very well in solid surf...personally, my sub-8' Jammer designs are what I tend to navigate to for that shortboard feel in bigger surf...really loving my current 7'8"...

My Phoenix V2 (7 10 x 30.5) is all I need up to OH conditions.  When I want to surf with more style, if the conditions allow it and it's not near closeout, I grab a longboard (usually paddle sometimes prone).

Hi, so I have a 8'8" 140L simsup that pushes my limit of balance and paddlability...

What model are you on?  I'm have the 7'8, 119 L ST (I'm only 145 lbs without my westsuit).  For the first 4 or 5 sessions, I had a hard time in chop, but then found my legs on it. Now I feel quite comfortable even with some lumps and dumps (I'd trade it in for the 7'4 if I could). I've had it in slightly overhead waves a few times and thought it held it's own pretty well (I'm an average SUSer at best).

I like a larger board in the 10' to 12' range for bigger surf.  Something that gets down the face of the wave fast and keeps me out in front of the whitewater. I'm 6'4" 230 and use the Simsup for the smaller stuff.  Having said that I recently picked up a B.Foote 10' Triton and have been surfing that in everything.

mmmh... i have tried the simsup S3 8' 6" in Santa Cruz with a nice clean swell shoulder high and felt so stable that I ordered a simsup ST 8'.

I am 175lbs with crappy skills but i managed to take some overhead waves in my last trip to Bali on a simsup ST 8':

Also i was out last week on super strong wind and very choppy seas in New York and it was hard work and i fell a lot but it was managable...

One tip i got last week was to keep the paddle on the water while i was waiting for the waves.... it is like having a 3rd leg!

In surf around shoulder/head-high, I like my 7'4 Jammer.  Quick, loose and slashy, if you surf it off the tail.  In surf shoulder to overhead, I like my 8'5 Blair because it paddles and catches waves easier than the 7'4 and the Blair hauls buns.  In knee high surf, I ride my 10'3 X 34 Edge AKA "the aircraft carrier."

Thanks Jim, after looking at supthecreek's video review of the prowave I'll see if a dealer here has a demo, I loved seeing his bottom turns.

Aloha Wardog, when I was in SB a few years ago there was no swell so I didn't get a chance to try your boards, not sure when I'll be down there again.

Thanks for the comments.

I have a custom S3.

I'll explore some of these options.  Still love to hear more suggestions.

Thanks, I saw your review of the Triton, very nice.  My first board was B Foote, interesting how life comes full circle.

I'd love to demo one, anybody know any options in Santa Cruz or SF?

i've got the L41 ST, and i really think the split tail on that makes a huge difference from boards like the S3. I have another custom Simmons shaped board that will slide out on bigger stuff, and it has more of a S3 design. The ST I take out in anything...double overhead to ankle biters. If I could change anything about it (8'4"*31" model), it would be to make it a 32" wide for a bit more stability, but i'm a klutz.

love my s3--paddled the aw over the wknd bc it was gusting to high 20's and i had 4/3 rubber on--it's got 20 liters more volume than the s3--yesterday i stuck with the aw as it paddles into the wave a touch easier than the s3--had i more time i would have run with the s3--woried re the time suck, had i needed to swap for the aw

head/chest and smaller, glassy, the s3 is my go-to---prolly fine on bigger, i just havent gone there with it yet

and yeah--grain of salt on all i say--i am a klutz too
