On a gun (or even a regular board) you can pop to your feet for a moment before it sinks and do what we used to call an "Island Dive." It gives you 5 or 6 feet of penetration under the water with almost no effort, then 2 more strokes and your down 10 or 12ft. Without having to expend all that energy pushing a thick, floaty wetsuit down under the water. In the 90's at Mav's I got caught inside in a beast I'll never forget. Too big for us prone paddlers anyway. Tow-in guys were the new thing, and they were out with maybe 5 of us paddle-in holdouts. This thing caught all of us (prone) paddlers. I was on a Doug Haut 10' 4" x 22" wide x 3 3/8" thick beautiful pintail with vee in the nose. The nicest board I ever had. We were experimenting with leashes, I was never so glad to have a 20 ft. leash. I swam to the bottom of that leash, and still got caught by the boom and rag-dolled. I don't miss that part.

Love stories like that. Thanks Feral.

I've surfed Haut's boards all my prone surfing life. He's a master craftsman.

Yeah, I can be a little melodramatic at times, but when I had that board made Jim Broach died a year or 2 before and Mark Foo had just died, I was deciding between Jeff Clark, Bob Pearson, something from Bob Wise, all of whom I have great respect for; or Doug Haut. I decided that if I might die on that board, I wanted it to be a Doug Haut. No better shaper or fisherman. Got hurt really bad, but I didn't die...

I'm just a weekend and vacation surfer. The only business I'd have being in surf that big is committing suicide.

Cool video by the way.

Caught inside, or caught on top, or caught just looking while relaxing on your back, do you think his eyes are open?
It takes a quiver to do that.
