We are looking at my absolute greatest fear in surfing of any kind.  Wiping out on a wave does not bother me as much as getting trapped in the impact zone on a big, long set.   Even in waves that are big, but not of this magnitude.

I should have installed that tail handle!
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

He's thinking... I may be a little deep, and it may be a late drop, but I could possibly make it.....

I agree, a properly installed tail handle would allow you to more easily tuck your head between your legs to kiss your ass goodbye.

wouldn't waste my time or oxygen scratching for a shoulder that doesn't exist.

..time to chill...take a couple a slow deep ones and then push glide deep and into a ball as far away from the board as possible ...wait for the explosion

It least you are getting the pile driver, and not becoming the pile driver

  looks like photoshop
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

I would not want to be anywhere near the board when the wave breaks.

No way would I be wearing a leash in those conditions.

Naturally I would be on a standup so, late takeoff, go for the cover-up, wave to the people on the beach as I exit the barrel to really claim it...Hey, if it's photo shopped why would I do anything less? ;D

On a gun (or even a regular board) you can pop to your feet for a moment before it sinks and do what we used to call an "Island Dive." It gives you 5 or 6 feet of penetration under the water with almost no effort, then 2 more strokes and your down 10 or 12ft. Without having to expend all that energy pushing a thick, floaty wetsuit down under the water. In the 90's at Mav's I got caught inside in a beast I'll never forget. Too big for us prone paddlers anyway. Tow-in guys were the new thing, and they were out with maybe 5 of us paddle-in holdouts. This thing caught all of us (prone) paddlers. I was on a Doug Haut 10' 4" x 22" wide x 3 3/8" thick beautiful pintail with vee in the nose. The nicest board I ever had. We were experimenting with leashes, I was never so glad to have a 20 ft. leash. I swam to the bottom of that leash, and still got caught by the boom and rag-dolled. I don't miss that part. I image searched and that's Isaac Stant at Peahi. Here's a vid with a few versions of my old "Island Dive"; most are sloppily executed, but the guy on the green board, at 19 or 20 sec... textbook.
