the first time i tried a foil kite surfing i fell and cut my leg on the blade beneath. bleeding in shark infested waters is not a pleasant thing. i now see tons of foilers out there, but have no interest myself. as far as SUPing w/one, i cannot imagine getting rolled in whitewater with that ginsu knife rolling around with you.

"After the successful experiment with Steve's (Southwesterly) SpeedWing forward quad fins, I decided to try a pair of Elevon forward quad fins with the foil tips.  They have come down in price over the last year."

I run the  red tip 3-d fins on my boards  one is set up as quad with   2sets  of fins one is set up as a  tri fin with a 6 inch center fin,  that is on my 10'6"   C-4  they work amazing  well I can feel the difference  in stability while standing, and in turns.  I hadn't thought about  if they slow me down on take offs.

Recently on my kings board which is wide (34") I modified a set of the 3-d  center fins ( 6 .5)  to fit  my side boxes, put 2 of those up front and 2 of the regular 3-d side bites in the rear.  Got a  really good ride on an otherwise very crappy day  lots of chop and current.  One proner buddy said it was the  best wave he had seen anyone  get in long time.  But it is possible it is  all in my head. after all in my head I am 20 something and can ride a standup like Kai. yeah may wife says I am crazy too!

Now if your biddies are like mine   you get a tube ride  that looks like pipe line and th e best remark you might get   is uh "nice wave"These are less expensive than the elevon but i have a pair of those also   and had to modify some boxes  to make the fit.

I think they work  well   but now I am thinking I will have to swap back to the  straight fins  to see if I can notice any difference when paddling for a wave.

I'm way too kooky for anything more than a board and a paddle. I can't imagine trying to handle the foil, and attaching the sail...insane.

Still looks like fun even if to watch and live vicariously through those a bit more nimble than myself.

Those Speedwing fins look / sound interesting. I'm currently using a basic quad setup on an 8'8" board. They seemed to do well last weekend in the FL storm swell. Not sure if I have the experience to discern the difference between basic and the advanced fins. Maybe something for Santa to bring this year?

Is it my perv imagination, or are the ends of those red tip 3-d fins designed to resemble the female apparatus?

The SpeedWings are more specifically designed to reduce tip turbulence, although they might have a slight foiling effect as well. The red tip 3-d fins look like they are both for tip turbulence and foiling.

I'm thinking of taking the rear quad fins out of the Prowave and seeing how the Elevons and the nubster do by themselves, but a red tip center might be interesting for lift.

I am just not the best person to evaluate these but it is fun to play around.

I can't help but think those large foils lifting the board out of the water look dangerous to the rider. I also think I would generally prefer the feel of the board on the water.

I've seen half a dozen types that are very different from each other..

It's not a simple one design that you can copy..

Cool well that's good to hear there are lots of variations, I will just use my my flying knolidge and go from there. It's not a huge project so should easily be able to try a few ideas. The mast is well under way so should take more than a week or two to have something to try.

Look at the moth boat foils.  I'm sure they sell them online somewhere.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

The hydrofoil section on kiteforum.com has alot of info on building foils. Admire the people tackling such a complicated project. Went the quick and easy route and bought a used Spotz1 this spring for kiting. Has to be one of the most surreal and elegant ways to travel across water. This guy posted pics of the Spotz2 just the other day: http://www.baxterbradford.com/events/spotzfoil/

I've been wanting to do this for such a long time. I have fair bit of experience from foilboarding with a kite.
That foil is quite a bit bigger than what I have seen before. Is it a standard size for windsurfing? Its probably why he can get going to early.

ME WANT!!!
