Kissinger, revisited

For those of you who were politically aware during the 60's and 70's, you no doubt remember Kissinger and his gravely voice on the nightly news. But so much of what he did was not visible to the public at the time; he was the classic Machiavellian puppeteer.

This article argues that it was Kissinger's policies and counsel to three administrations that really shaped the middle east into the mess it is today. When the Iranians refer to the "Great Satan" they are probably really thinking of Kissinger. It is hard to imagine someone (well, other than Hitler or Stalin) who had such far ranging effect on so many people's lives in so many countries. Realpolitik is the name for Kissinger's style of "diplomacy".

I love the dismissive "the soviet union was doomed anyway" statement. What a lightweight way to rewrite history. I read an interesting book years ago titled something like "we almost won" by a senior ex-KGB official. An enlightening read. And Kissenger sucked the soviet union into Afghanistan to prop up a "soviet-leaning" government that his policies had destabilized. Wow. Both an idiot and a Machiavellian genius with just one article.

I never thought of Kissinger as anything but a high level con artist.  He was one of those government "Kardashians" who was famous for being famous, and knew how to play a role.

Con, famous, whatever--Kissinger "did" a lot to a lot of people. Usually isn secret--like when he and Nixon (illegally) bombed Laos and Cambodia. But with Kissinger, the list of shit like this goes on and on.
