We love them like people...way too much.  I'm guilty as heck about that.   I think the hardest thing is having to make the decision to put them down; better for them, but harder for us.  So much easier if they would just pass on their own, but I know it's better to end their suffering.  I had to put one down a few years ago and I wasn't the same for weeks.  Brings tears to my eyes, even years later.  Coming up soon on another one and it's hard to contemplate.

Our condolences...we lost our beloved choco Lab, Annie Mae, last Summer after 15 years...you might have remembered her when we met at the Oregon Coast...Netarts Bay...or, maybe at our shop...our new puppy helped to start to feel the hole...kinda weird to think...but, at some point our dogs may outlive us...

I haven't been able to do it again. I've never been without a dog except for about 6 months when I was 18. Our last dog, Samba, was also 15 when I had to have her put down. Best dog I ever had and I simply can't bear the idea of that pain again.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts. We're in Dana Point--at least I am, Diane is getting together with girlfriends in San Diego .  Surf was kind of crappy this afternoon, but I went for it anyway. Needed some salt water up my nose.. Windy and choppy, but some set waves. AKA Maui Glass.

Yes Wardog, I remember your dog. Great pup. Almost enough to make me want another Lab.  We're going to wait a while. Do some travelling and things that are harder to do with a pup. But I'll have to get Diane another Brittany someday. She ruins them for hunting, but I'm jind of done with that anyway. Maybe I can teach it to surf. Sam was absolutely terrible at it.

RIP Sam. I put down my dog Kaya last summer. I rescued her from a shelter when she was 6 weeks old, when I was a young immature college kid. She spent the next 12+ years by my side. Hardest day of my life, without question. Fortunately we were able to let her go at home and she never had to get off the couch and she passed with her head on my lap. I cried like a baby. We spread some of her ashes at Dogpatch, her favorite spot on the west coast in her short time there, and saved the rest for when we move back to let them go in Matunuck, her home of over 6 years and her favorite place by far. I still think about her every day. All the best to you and Diane.

I'm not a crier--about anything, but I got my keyboard all wet while I was typing that first post. Dogs are important.

The human/canine relationship is an interesting, and important, part of our our history...
Surfing with your pup(s) is a worthwhile pursuit...time well spent...a well fitting DFD with grab handle is key...if you want a real challenge, try surfing with two Labs on board...;-)

Bill, that is sad news.  The only thing that makes losing a dog bearable is that the dogs are there right up to the end helping us through it.

Awww, major bummer!  Very sorry to hear about the loss of Sam.   We lost our beloved Golden Retriever, Hunter, four years ago and like you I never thought I'd get emotional over a dog.  He slipped away in my arms and I cried like a baby.  Ugh, I could get choked up right now.  The wife cried for months....we finally got our next Golden about a year later.  Time.....

As is often said, I'm sure you were both as lucky to have him as he of you.

Shirley and I were bummed.  I've avoided owning a dog after the heartache I had losing them in the past.  But I love 'em better than many people.
