Surfer almost decapitated by sup at teahupoo
« on: September 01, 2015, 11:44:42 AM »
Another reason to hate SUP...
Yesterday, Jack Robinson was almost decapitated by a SUP at Teahupoo. Surfing Tahiti’s infamous wave is usually sketchy enough on its own: There’s the giant waves and the shallow coral, with the two often combining to dangerous, even fatal, effect.

However, yesterday the Australian surfer had another floating obstacle in his path: a SUP board that at one stage threatens to decapitate the 18-year-old.

Reminding us of the time Raimana Van Bastolaer was almost coat-hangered by a Jet Ski at Teahupoo, the SUP, which had to be jettisoned by its owner in an attempt to get over the wave, is picked up and thrown over with the lip of the wave. The 8-foot-long, 20-pound board narrowly misses Robinson’s head and then is almost spat back out of the tube along with Robinson.

To his credit, the surfer remains unfazed and successfully completes the ride

"Almost decapitated".

Please.

So, the board didn't even hit said surfer and this happens with other boards as well. The article goes on to describe the "8 foot long board" like it some unusually large menace.

Weak sauce.

Just think if it didn't happen you couldn't have a chance to win a Milwaukee tool pack.

Never could get to the video, but do you want to be the one to tell the Tahitian local that he can't stand up there?

Honestly that didn't even look close?  He was deep in the barrel and this was on the outside lip. I am sure you can find plenty of video showing many more near misses with other people,  boards and jet skis.

However the guy ditched his board or did he get sucked over too?

I was expecting to see a board narrowly missing his head but from that video it doesn't look like it.  I do think the headline is overly dramatic to bring in the  haters.

What an absolutely lame headline. That wasn't even close. Getting so tired of typical media hype BS.

That could be a headline at any crowded surf break.... every day
"Surfer almost decapitated by shortboard"
"Surfer almost decapitated by longboard"
"Surfer almost decapitated by _________"

Like listening to politicians attack each other

I was expecting to see a bloody neck, etc.  How can you be almost captivated without a scratch.
I almost got bitten by a shark last weekend.  It was by Huntington pier, in about 1 foot of water, it was probably less than 18" long.  That counts right?

another thought is the headline is slanted because the guy was  on a sup,   if it were a proner  or singer would we be hearing about it..  IT is all just BS  stuff happens in a heavy line up like that.

Sorry boys but that was bloody close especially with the ankle strap linking the board to the rider. He looked pretty stoked he missed it at the end of the ride.

It was a stungun  ;)
