Sharkapalooza in Santa Cruz today.
« on: August 28, 2015, 04:28:56 PM »
20 to 30 juvenile great white sharks (12 feet or less) were sharing waves with both prone and stand up surfers at Manresa today.

For those of you on FaceBook, look up Specialized Helicopters for the creepy video. It shows sharks following people and cruising just feet off the beach.

Specialized Helicopters
"Surfers and Sharks Today- You should see this in High Def. Amazing the surfers could not see them. SUPER SCARY. There where about 20-30 sharks all over Manresea State Beach in Santa Cruz today. The Great White Sharks where all smaller than 12' and were not aggressive, but to know so many great Whites were next to and under you should send chills down your spine. it sure did for the pilots and passengers flying over that spotted them. Come take a tour with us and see for yourself."

Thank you Robert for posting the link.

Hot tip; if you see a helicopter hovering over you in the surf, they are not there to film your rad cutback.

The warm water is bringing them out.  I'm headed out for dawn patrol - but not at Manresa.  I should not have any illusions about the sharks staying outside of the kelp, though.

Carl - low tide Zero dark thirty.  I'll be in the water at Capitola and headed up to Sharks by 05:30.

See you there or will you still be sawin' logs?

Hi, Mike,

I follow the tide, whatever time of day.  Around the point breaks of Sharks and Privates, 3 foot tide and lower, or things get pretty bouncy and it takes much larger waves to overcome the high tide over the reefs.  That means some kind of dawn patrol every other week or so.  If the tides are over 3 feet, I avoid going out at those spots unless special circumstances or I just want to get out.

Pleasure Point is much better when tides are medium to higher, but still haven't ventured over there too often. My neighbor showed me an inside break at Pleasure Point about two weeks ago, very nice, but as usual, when spotters saw waves to catch, a few decided we were lonely and came over.

Hi, Paul,

Yeah, you are hard core dawn patrol.  I usually wait until dawn patrol is wakeup time about 6:30AM, get out by 7:15 to 7:30, then advance a half hour a day with the tide depending on the "below 3 foot" tide marker. I have been known to get up by 6 at times.

At 5:30, I might be passed out on the board snoring, or at least requiring a coffee IV drip.

I used to think I couldn't balance in the morning for some reason, but discovered I can.  It is really one of very prettiest times of day and makes me regret being a night owl.

I have wedding to attend tomorrow and some other wife mandated social engagements inland for a few days, will probably be back out by Wed. or Thurs., so I will miss the wave push that is coming through on Saturday.

I have to remember to bring a sacrificial board when I come to SoCal next month, so I can do that and leave it around at Dogpatch.  Interesting sharkbite though. My guess would be keyhole saw, but it might have been some other tool. Perhaps some grom's head?

Could be worse, it might have been a Bathynomus attack:

What are the water temps up there now? They said it was 72 in north san diego county today but it felt like over 75. It was possibly the warmest water I have ever been in down here.

The official water temp right now is 67 degrees. Unheard of for Santa Cruz.

Although the L41 is tucked as far as you can get in the Monterey Bay and I suspect it is warmer than that.
All I can say is that it is the warmest I can ever remember and I've surfed here for over 40 years.
