Do a search of messages on this site....Plenty of advice already out there....Here in SoCal, Dogpatch (at San Onofre) is a SUP mecca worth experiencing.   Not necessarily the best wave, but certainly a great vibe, plus there are plenty of other spots in the area that offer more challenge.

Buena suerte!

Disneyland, knotts Berry Farms, ocean world, Sacramento old town. The kids will love it.

For the surfer   Swarmies, Churches, HB pier, Malibu, Rincon, Steamer Lane, and Pleasure Point and of course
Mavericks. That should get you to the bay area.

Tell us which was your favorite and the spot which had the warmest reception.   :)

This is kind of an interesting notion--to map out surf spots according to SUP criteria. Good waves, good access, no one shooting at you, that kind of thing. I know it goes against every theoretical rule of surf culture, but:
A. That's bullshit anyway, there have never been secret places, and these days every surf-able break is mapped a thousand different places.
B. What surf culture? The apparel one or the grumpy guy with the ponytail bobbing on a longboard.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

One bit of advise when your friend gets here.  Please tell him not to refer to it as "Cali".

+1

Surf spots?  It just dawned on me this morning that I haven't surfed in 2mos.  "Santa Barbara" is actually a Chumash phrase meaning "that swell didn't hit here...."  Good thing I enjoy paddling.

Being a Cali native, the only people that I've heard that don't like the term "Cali", are the ones that live up in Frisco.
It takes a quiver to do that.

That pretty much describes the sup haters on Swaylocks.

When is the trip? I can hook him up with a beach rental in South OC close to all the spots and not too far from the tourist stuff too. Pono can attest.

I can set him up with some good shapers too or used boards depending on what he's looking for.
