I love the fight! Getting my ass handed to me just makes me even more determined. Sure I'm sucking wind. Sure the proners are chuckling. Sure the babes are waiting for my autograph....oh wait, that's just oxygen deprivation cause I'm beat down and about to drown. Anyway, I love the fight!

I don't realize how spoiled I am to live, and surf, at a point break that I can paddle around the impact zone. In addition to a dry hair paddle out with a channel, the spot that I surf most has a deep water zone on the inside. A perfect place to wait out a set.

It's a big shock when I go surf the beach breaks south of town. And no, I don't enjoy the paddle out when I have to push through multiple lines of whitewater.

Ok, so I'm a wimp. I'm the first to admit it. This is supposed to be fun right?

I definitely don't enjoy the paddle in.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I don't mind the paddle out, but I'm not a big fan of having to fight my way out.

I was getting knocked around a bit two days ago on the paddle out. I was at Head-of-the Meadow beach with my wife, visiting one of our favorite haunts. Man was I getting knocked around in the chest-high surf. It was mostly knee paddling out with a bunch of duck dives. I even got knocked off my board doing a duck dive by a monster wave. I guess I didn't expect it to hit so hard. The surf was good though, and I got some good rides, including one on the biggest face I've ever been on.

I got knocked off my board trying for a wave and had to recover very quickly before the next one. I managed to pull myself prone on the board, then the wave had me. It ended up being a very strange, smooth ride into shore, as if I were on the world's biggest boogie board. I went over the sand bar, into the trough beyond it, then beached. It was the most effortless run I've ever had!

Yeah, it's all part of the adventure so I dig it. Since I can't duck dive these beasts I'm getting better at being more patient and waiting so I can sneak out between sets. I'm also getting better at kicking my board through the lip when needed. Having said that, there are those bigger short period days when I yearn to be paddling off to the side of a point break. Supposed to be something coming tomorrow!

I laughed out loud when I read that!

I especially love it when my board hits me in the mouth, 'cause I love that kind of stuff.

The battle out is my favorite way to show off.  Love leaving the proners scratching the noggin.  Surf stance all day long baby.

The whole sequence is my screen saver at work and has been since Cammar posted them. When Pono snagged cammars picture for his blog I followed the link to the surf report....favorited and put it in my news feed. He's on here occasionally, I wish he would contribute to the hot chicks thread...he has a great eye...;)

Blame Laird...or maybe Blame Cammar!

that picture reminds me in a much smaller way of the feeling i got when I first started out and would  be paddling out and over an incoming  set   small  like a 4 foot face and  not anywhere near critical. but he feeling was for an instance like I was king of the sea  or like  a sea captain  heading towards  unknown waters and adventure.

But you know what's really freaky about those photos of Laird out there that day...  I don't see a leash and it's gusting 50 freaking knots! :-[

Laird is that confident - as he should be because he is that good, but yeah, fall off in a gale with no leash and your board is going to flip from rail to rail and skip across the ocean on it's way to the mainland. I guess he figures "If that happens I'll just body surf in and call it a day." But now that I think about it, Laird would probably swim after it and actually get it!

Yes there is one for sure. Thanks for checking that.  It would make no sense without one.  Laird is all about the right gear.
