Amazing, and what a wave! The consistency enabled that kind if calm control.

Sean Holmes is a local legend - he is also the marketing director for the PRIMI restaurant chain which has sponsored our PRIMI Naish SUP Downwind in Cape Town for the past 5 years (=double legend)! And Kelly is just Kelly.....

I should be in Jbay in the next week or two...... :)

Wow, great surfing and music. Thanks.

That ride @ 2:00  :o

I didn't know about "Chasing Dora" but look forward to watching it. Thanks.

That reminded me to revisit Chasing Dora

Amazing, and what a wave! The consistency enabled that kind if calm control.
What amazed me though is how closely he is watching and reading/predicting what the wave will do in the next second and the reactions are in milliseconds. I don't even think they are conscious moves. The only time I can say I performed in sports in any way comparably was when I was playing short stop in a little league game (yes I have to go back that far). No hitter, bottom of the 6th (end of the game in LL) and my best friend has the no-hitter going.  The best hitter of the other team is his brother who is also a good friend and he's at the plate.  He cracks a line drive between short and 3rd. I don't remember leaving my feet but made a diving catch to save the no-hitter. Dad (who was also our coach) always said it looked like I dove before the bat met the ball. One of the other teams dad's was a local sports reporter and the catch got more press than the no-hitter... :). Reflexes of the young....today if I can see a section coming I'm lucky. Only Kelly isn't that young and still has it.

kelly has athletic gifts. perhaps more importantly, he's got durability. where there may have been other surfers with his gifts over the years, they've aged out or been injured, unable to come back.

look then at a guy like mark messier. same deal, even more extreme. guy took huge hits for 40 (25 in nhl) years yet continued to play at the highest level. some of his durabilty is about fitness and conditioning, but most is that he is a freak of durability--better ligaments cartilage and bones--simple--likely genetic.

Yes, absolutely - watching, reading and predicting. The nice thing about reef and point breaks is their predictability and it's obvious Slater and Holmes have ridden J Bay so much that they have that wave wired. That says a lot about their ability too because J Bay looks like such an incredibly challenging wave.

Did anyone notice that Kelly's last wave was about 1 MINUTE and 10 seconds long?!! I grew up surfing a point but there's no way the rides were that long. Anyone ridden a wave that long? (Behind a stink pot motor boat doesn't count ;))
