Scotland Downwinder - Sound of Arisaig
« on: August 04, 2015, 05:12:04 AM »
ColdSup - We missed you! Awesome winds here on the west coast today. Took the RPC 14' Elite iSUP across the Sound of Arisaig which is a 4 mile / 6.4km run that works in a Northerly and Southerly. Winds this morning were 25-35 mph / 40 - 56 kph but are now nearer 40mph / 64k kph, and just a little too gnarly.. I'll put together a vid later, but here is a couple of shots and the map..

Nice one. Get yourself on our Facebook page too...post up the pics. Been a few chats on downwinding recently.....some folk want to do an epic Loch Ness run.

I bit the bullet and went to the docs.....stack of antibiotics so hopefully fighting fit soon.

ColdSUP - I'm not a big FB user, but feel free to repost anything you want that I've posted here.. I've been plotting some other routes.. which could be interesting with the right crew and safety measures in a SSW wind. I've paddled Arisaig to Mallaig before, which is pretty to start with but bleak towards the end.

Another great run across the Sound of Arisaig yesterday in 25mph / 40kph conditions. Wind was good enough to get a RPC 10-8 Mega on the plane..  Note the double leash system..

Was on the Island of Eigg yesterday and wind was perfect direction to downwind to Mallaig (around 18km / 11.25 miles).. There's a lot of sea kayakers who do this round trip, but this is something for another trip. Here is a picture landing on the beach at Cleadale on Eigg. Did a couple of nice upwind / downwind runs here in the bay.

Here is the map of the Eigg - Mallaig run in a SW wind. There is a ferry service to and from Eigg from Mallaig or you can get one of the private operators like Seafari www.seafari.co.uk who have an operation out of Mallaig Harbour (Tel: +44(0)1471 833316 / email: skye@seafari.co.uk) who could take a group out to Eigg (or other upwind destination and act as a safety boat on the way back. You'd need to have a good sized group to share costs.. Conditions around here change quickly and so local weather knowledge is important.

I actually shivered looking at that water.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Been to Eigg on a RNLI lifeboat before and picked up by helicopter on the beach...pretty cool. Looks like you are having a good one.  I am posting up a couple of your pics on our page btw.

Pono......wait for winter.....that's when it really gets cold :)

ColdSup - That sounds pretty awesome. It's a beautiful area here, and it was windy almost every day; either downbreezing or downwinding weather. And not too cold with a 3mm wetsuit on. Would have loved to have had my SIC Bullet 14v1 but the RedPaddle 14 Elite iSUP was still a lot of fun. Will be back next year with luck... I'll get a vid up in next week or so.

Here is the video. Please note this was the first time my paddle partner had done a downwinder. He had a double leash system, full PFD, and whistle, and I stopped for him every 5 minutes along the way so he could catch up as he knee paddled the RPC 10-6 Mega iSUP for the main part when it got too gnarly. Great run and amazing how the RPC 14' Elite Race iSUP performed

I was going to make a snide comment about how much fun your mate would be having stepping around on his inflatable with all those leashes to trip up in but I see he quickly found a preemptive solution.

Long walk home? You Scots are a hardy lot.

Yugi - Yep, not exactly the best downwind set up (or board!) for my buddy, but he had a lot of fun being out safely in those conditions, all the same. The walk back out was about a 1km and we returned to get a car to drive back down through the fields to collect the boards. The wind picked up to 40mph / 64kph later that day, and so it could have become a lot more gnarly. These iSUPs literally fly, in those conditions if you are not lying flat on them!
