Uli Mini Quad
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:48:16 PM »
Had a chance to demo an Uli 8'4" Mini Quad for the week. I was reluctant it would perform but after a few waves it was feeling GREAT! Quite surprised at it's maneuverability! Browsing the Uli website I see there even better surf inflaters! The Totem looks AMAZING!  8) Thankin' Chris and Ken "Brah" for "Inflating" my ego even more.  ;D

I love those things man. I need to sell my 12'6" inflatable and get them to make me an inflatable all arounder for travel. That GL is really hard to beat.

I'm on vacation in New England, and as always have my trusty Uli Steamroller 10-0 with me.  I ran up to Rhode Island on Sunday and although I had fun on the Steamroller was wishing I was on my on my SIMSUP.  The Mini Quad looks great, and I'll bet the Totem is even more SIMSUP-like. Fun that travels!

SC, Thanks, for the review!  Seeing you rip on the MQ is making my decision to get a 9' Lopez Ltd. a lot easier.

Surfercook, great shots, that ULI looks like a decent surf SUP for travel.

What about the fins? are they fixed or removable?
my old Uli you'd roll the board up around the fins and consequently crush the fins a  bit but a hair dryer would straighten them right out...

Thanx for all the interest and comments, cowboy, andy, capo, Gramps, and carib.

Gramps- I hear the 9'0" Lopez is a sweet ride! I don't know your "Dims" but I'd imagine the 9'0" would ride someone up to around 220 lbs no prob.

cowboy- GL?

Carib- Fins on the Mini are looking like they're fixed. Mini is no longer in production. The new models have Future boxes to switch up between plastic river fins and true ocean wave surfing fins!

Future boxes would allow Controller quads on the Totem, and I think that would be the hot setup.

Seeing as the Mini Quad is no longer in production, can some of you with experience discuss the qualities of both the the Totem and the Fat Ass Quad from a surf perspective? I'm intrigued by the Totem, but can find very little information about it on the web. I'm looking for a stand up surfboard first and foremost, but I may find myself paddling the board a fair distance to get to waves. Would the Totem be a total bear in that regard?

As a side note, and I'm not making this up, while I was typing this response, I got a call from Jim Weir himself in response to a general inquiry I made on the Uli website. I'm trying to figure out the best board for me, and the owner himself called me. Very cool.

The Mini Quad has been discontinued but still available to purchase from Uli..what they told me

"Typically the Mini Quad has fixed fins, but you can option for fin boxes for no additional charge.  You would need to purchase the fins though, which are, I believe, $12 each.  The Mini is $1275."

nice video, and it surfs a little better than expected.  I guess for a travel board where no other alternative, that board would be fun.  Sure beats sitting on the beach squirming because you didn't being a board and the surf is going off.

you have to get your buddies to get a Totem for you to demo...

Caribsurf- Totem should be here next week!. I would DEFINITELY opt for boxes in any inflatable. Great option if river surfing is available. Thanx for checkin out my vid.
