Soft rack
« on: August 03, 2015, 07:25:09 AM »
I am planning to get a new board soon, currently I just own an inflatable.  Found a deal on a 2015 SIC X14 demo board that I am thinking pretty strongly on buying.  I don't have a way to transport a board.  Hard racks are way way way expensive so I was thinking about a soft rack.  I found a thread on here from a few years ago about soft racks.  Many people were saying not to drive on the freeway with them.  If they are unsafe enough that I can't drive on a freeway I don't think I would want one.  However some people say they drive on the freeway with the HandiRack.  The HandiRack looks pretty good to me.  I would be driving on the freeway to some of our local reservoirs that are around an hour drive at 70 mph.  Am I asking for trouble to be transporting a 14' board with a softrack on the freeway.  Any advice on getting a rack would be appreciated.  Oh, I also noticed that Yakima or Thule has something made for SUP boards that secures the nose and tale to the bumpers.  Might be worth looking into especially with a 14' board.

I was thinking of maybe getting a HandiRack and using it in conjunction with the Yakima SUP bra for extra security.  I guess I may also need a board bag to protect my board from the straps.

We recommend using stiff foam blocks and two good straps instead of using soft racks as it allows you to place the pads where the roof is strongest and putting the straps over the boards gives you a more solid connection than strapping the pads to the roof and then strapping the board to the pads, the board generally has more play using soft racks and will move around when driving.  This is the method we use for rental boards and what we recommend instead of using soft racks:

Thanks for the replies everyone.  This one looks pretty good.  A local shop where I may buy a board carries these.  Anyone use them before?

Those will look really cool on your Bently.
For you other vehicles, check out the ones at the Paddle Surf Warehouse site for $70.  Many shops carry the same brand and just have their own name on them.
